Hey all, over the last couple months I’ve been researching how to make it so my manual paddle shift buttons could also be added/rerouted to the shifter knob because I hate it how you have to be at 10 and 2 with both hands on the wheel in order to manually shift my A10 s550. I got the idea because I have an f150 2014 5.0 with manual shift buttons on the shifter and I use them all the time cuz it’s just plain fun, long story short after a lot of research, finding a thread on here that kind of explains it and a little trial and error I was finally able to successfully install a hurst shifter with manual buttons successfully all while keep my paddle shifters in tact and functional, but I unfortunately had strip a few wires I didn’t need to and go through processes I didn’t need to along with a lot of frustration so I figured I’d post how to do it on here so the next guy who wants to do it doesn’t have to go through what I did. I’ll explain in the reply to this post.

So first thing you’re gonna want to go online and buy the hurst shifter from American muscle from the 2013-2014 mustang s197, yes it’s going to say will not fit but I assure you it will that’s the only shifter with buttons pre-installed and it works like a charm trust me, the other thread on here installed a whole other shifter in between his e-brake and console there’s no need to add the extra just use the hurst shifter. Next you’ll need some wiring, you don’t have to remove anything on the steering wheel (of course I did multiple times but there’s no need) and this goes for all mustangs 2018-2023, the 2015-2018’s have a different color scheme on the wiring I can tell you what colors they are as well.

But 2018-2023 first, so from there you need to take the bottom cover off the steering column there’s one bolt under there I wanna say it’s 8mm. Pop it off.

Next find the steering column control module clip, when facing the steering wheel it’s the clip on the back side up and to the left. Pretty easy to find there’s only two clips the other one is to the bottom right and you won’t need to do anything with it.

So pop the clip out by squeezing the tab easy as pie, from there you’ll need a blue wire (transmission control/communication) it’s the only blue wire. Hook that to the black wire on the hurst shifter, the black wire you’ll see is routed to both buttons. Hook it up run it accordingly, (also I assume you know how to pop the shifter cover and shift knob off if not YouTube has a number of easy how to videos.) so run that wire I prefer leaving the wire completely in tact stripping it with a lighter then saudering them together and add black tape then melt it a little so it sticks or use sleeves.

next and this is where I had to trial and error, imagine hitting the button and your wipers and horn goes off lmao luckily I got the downshift right the first time. Alright so your shift up and down wires, the downshift is going to be a green wire (you’ll see there are four) but the one you need for downshift is going to be pin #9 if you look at the back of the clip they put numbers on the end of each row accordingly. Pin 9 is again your downshift, run wire and hook up accordingly to your shifter.

finally the upshift wire, the upshift wire is white (there are two of them) you need the wire located in PIN #10, hook it up and run it accordingly. With the hurst shifter the pilot holes to screw on it are located on the sides instead of the front you’ll have to do what you can you can either drill new holes or find another way to make the shifter stay put if you want it permanent and know you’re not ever going to change it maybe a little JB weld at the bottom just be extra careful you don’t overdue it. Whatever works for you. And that’s it, you now have a manual shifter on your shift knob enjoy, it’s a lot of fun!

Alright so the 2015-18 mustangs you’ll use the pics below for the proper wire colors. And both of these are for the GT’s only as I’m not sure the eco boost have the same wiring scheme. ENJOY!

Paddle shifters are fine for straight line driving but I can definitely see the advantages of having them on the shift handle for any kind of curvey driving.
That said, I've never been a fan of pistol grip shifters. But you have a very nice mod there that's an elegant solution for what you were trying to achieve.
All in all, an excellent install, just not to my taste. Which, let's face it, shouldn't matter a damn to you.

That's pretty cool. Excellent write-up!

I'm not crazy about paddle shifters around town as I like to short-shift from full stop. (I'm in no hurry...Just saving fuel.) Straight line accelerations are not an issue at all, but R/H or L/H turns provide a challenge. Accelerating in/from a corner in town, the paddles are not always in an optimum location for short shifting, so at times I must visually scan the wheel's circumference, locating the correct shift paddle to activate. Your solution obviously would help with that dilemma.

One question....How did you address the shifter lockout rod?

In the OPs second post the product pic shows the button in the upper finger groove that when squeezed depresses the shifter lockout rod.

That’s exactly why I did it that and as I’ve got a chance to drive it with the mod I love the fact that I can now drive casually down the strip with one hand on the wheel and manually shift without looking like a nerd keeping my hands at 10-2 just cruising, I’ve virtually never used the manual shift feature until I got this installed, I love that I can leave it in a low gear and stay in the power band as long as I want so every time I hit the gas she’s sending, not that I couldn’t do that with the paddles but I simply never did just because of the inconvenience of having to drive it like a square in order to use them. But l can see using the paddle shifters at the track for sure and at high speeds when I run 1/4’s I’m both hands on the wheel no doubt, just cruising it’s a huge pain. Not only that it’s so much easier to drift and whip shitties now lol

Yes there’s a functional trigger/button that works very nicely on the grip. But for those of you that aren’t into the hurst pistol grip shifter I also had the option of just using the stock shifter knob for the 2013-2014 S197’s. They’re about half price and as one commenter said he doesn’t care for the pistol grip look and that’s understandable. To each his own, in that case should be able to use the other shifter described above

That’s understandable to each is own, in that case tho I’m fairly certain that if you want to use the stock 2013-2014 s197 shifter with the plus minus button on the handle you should be able to, I thought about going that route cuz it’s about 1/2 the price maybe even cheaper if you could find one wrecked out or on a website like the parts farm. Now again I didn’t go this route so I cant say for 100% certain, but I wouldn’t be surprised with a little finagling that you could make this work.
