The real reason PP wheels are Black

I think the PP wheels on the GT look great, but the PP wheels on the Ecoboost aren't too exciting. In general, black wheels need the right color car to match.

Not saying I don't Like the PP wheels.. but I would have preferred either a set of 19" Foundry wheels or 19" Bright machined Aluminum wheels( They are the 20" rims for those of you who don't know) over the PP 19" Gloss black Aluminum wheels...

Of course I'd want them in all black since they offset the Main colors and sit in the same color with the Lower Valances/Front lip/Side skirt

If someone doesn't want their PP wheels, I'd be glad to trade with them for my 18's (stock on premium EB) + some cash, maybe use my set winter tires and use the cash to get a new set you like?

18's will fit over the EB PP brakes (which are the same as the standard GT brakes). Correct on 19's being required for GT PP.

Main reason I changed the color of this mustang from my normal beloved black painted Mustangs to Magnetic was the PP wheels. I just love the contrast of the magnetic paint with the black wheels. Meanest/Badass combo in my opinion...

I saw black wheels with red calipers on a red C7 which also had black accents on the rest of the car and it looked awesome. I think the lighting has to be right and the wheel has to have something (like red calipers underneath) or some colored/machined/etc trim on the tire or wheel itself that helps its stand out and not just appear to be a black hole where the wheels should be. I've seen some photos of the S550 with the black PP wheels that look pretty killer and others that look dreadful (usually dark photos where the wheels look like black steel wheels missing their hubcaps). I also really dislike multispoke wheels, which is why I don't care for the PP wheels on the GT in most pics I've seen. That said when the light is right (ie you can see the wheels) it does look pretty cool on most colors of the car. I also do have to admit I kind of like the black PP wheels on the ecoboost since it is 5 spoke, looks sportier to me. Wish they offered more variety in black.

Further I saw huge (too big) chrome wheels on an otherwise nice looking Camaro the other day and it just looked way too blingy and somewhat dated to me. I only like chrome wheels for the most part on classic cars, and even then only the factory look, not aftermarket.

Does that make sense?

All a matter of personal preference -- for me, it's gotta be chrome. I'm going to search out a set of chromes as soon as TireRack makes wheels available for the 2015's.

chrome was ruined for me when the guy down the road put 24" on his 2009. Cut the bumper a bit I think just to get them to fit....smh.

That being said, they are not an unattractive design. You just can't see it. If they were just a nice dark grey instead, that would completely change the look for the better.

Cool driving shots, but DEFINITELY mute that video... the dialogue between the 'car guys' is maddening. 'The guys who buy the Ecoboost are gonna be the guys who REAAAAALLY know what they're doing, mod it for power, balance...'. The Eco is the practical choice, and not the overwhelming choice for modders... :frusty:

The black wheels are also making me consider not getting the ever-so-necessary PP. Powdercoating sounds possible but I'll have to see others do it, and I'd prefer to be good-to-go from the factory. Although... the thought of Magnetic PP with grabber blue calipers just entered my mind... that might pop quite nicely...

From my humble science background I would like to mention a factor which manufacturers might thought about during the R&D stages.

Black painted surfaces emit heat energy (as an infrared radiation) more than unpainted aluminum wheel. Black painted surfaces, however, absorb radiation more than aluminum surfaces.

In real life driving, the surrounding objects to the car have less heat energy which will lead us to think the black painted wheel emits more than it absorbs.

General conclusion, in my opinion and from my little knowledge in radiation, I would say PP wheels are black to help cool them down during hardcore driving. wheels get hot mainly from conduction of the five bolts (including mounting surface) and tires. If cooling by air isn't enough, radiating is a natural option to go with.
