It is very easy. Take multiple shots, you MUST remember to:
Set manual mode
Remove auto ISO
Set WB
Set shutter
and set aperture.

First, you want to shoot a base image, a photo with yourself not in it as you will use it as your main layer in PS.
Your series will be slightly underexposed to really make your highlights and shadows pop with the flash.
Do not change any of these settings while creating that one photo or things will get hard to blend together.
You'll end up with this:

VPTmHcp.webp

Afterwards, take all of those images into LR, apply a preset, make some brush adjustments and then open them "as a layer" in PS. Select all your layers, auto align them and then disable all the layers besides your "base image". Start by enabling each layer and creating a layer mask on top of that layer to delete yourself and other objects out from the "flash layer" that you will be working on.

Charles,

Thank you very much for taking the time to show me. Much appreciated!! Checking out more and more of your work on flickr. Very Cool!!!

Couple pics from the weekend. Really thinking about going full frame and actually buying lenses someday. Hard to weigh car parts vs. camera equipment :p

HEre is where full frame gives you the flexibility. Because I was doing donuts with my camera on a tripod, I had to have the camera far away so I could keep things in focus and not worry about hitting the tripod. Which meant a wide angle lens.

This was shot at 24mm, and while I don't have the original file on me, I had to crop it in significantly. But 24 mp on a FF sensor gives me all kinds of creative cropping options.

Nikon D750 with Nikon 24-85mm 3.4 to 4.5 shot at 24mm (ISO 100, F-13, 1/100)

Few more pics today with @V8Venom. I've been starting to feel a LOT more confident shooting in manual mode as opposed to automatic. For me, it seems that once I set my settings, I can feel confident that the next few pictures in the same angle/spot will come out great and not have to worry about annoying exposure problems.

When I was in automatic earlier, I noticed that one pic was underexposed and one was overexposed, assuming it's because of where I was focusing (I guess?). So manual is working out really well

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
The reason for the exposure changes is the metering is basing the exposure on a different part of the frame. I'd expect if you were using auto, you were using evaluative metering and not spot meting. When you change your angle, camera location, etc, the overall scene exposure changes. Sometimes the camera will think it needs to meter for the car, sometimes the ground, sometime the sky - hence your exposure variance. Yes, for shooting cars, especially when they're not moving, manual is 100% the way to go. Even moving cars work with manual if you know the shutter speed you want, but you could kick into shutter priority if you're experiencing lighting changes. Right settings for the job is all you need.

I do find your images did have the sky very overexposed. Although I do appreciate single shot exposure, a *BIT* of HDR could have helped. Black cars in bright light mean overexposed skies, no way around it...

When you are doing focus and recompose while using spot metering, where is the camera metering the light? Say I have my focus point right in the middle of the frame, I'll focus on the subject dead center then recompose to put the subject into one of the thirds of the frame. Will the camera be metering on the subject when it was originally focused, or will it meter in the center at the time the shutter is released? I use back button focus.

If you are on SPOT METERING, it is where your focus dot is. Regardless of how you recompose.

Same with Matrix. It takes a reading on where you set focus, and locks that in. So if your re composure has a lot more sunlight in it, then your initial focus, you can in fact blow out the sky from it being over exposed.

I was doing some macro shots of flowers at a park last weekend using a Nikon 24-70 on my D7200. I decided to shoot a portrait of my girlfriend without changing any settings. I focused on her face then recomposed her to the side and took the shot. I noticed that her face was severely underexposed and the backgrounds overexposed but when focusing and taking the shot at the same time with her center frame everything was fine.

Aperture priority, f2.8, auto ISO set to max 3200/base 100.

Basically what I should have done was move the focus point where I wanted it before taking the shot, right? When would the focus/recompose method be useful if this is a common issue?

Here is a little trick I picked up a long time ago... bracketing.
