easy choice for me (obviously being on a Mustang forum!), and this is coming from someone who hasn't driven any of the cars you mention...I guess it all depends on what you want from your car, if its build quality, materials & the luxury factor that you are after then get the BMW, whilst the Mustang will lose the battle on those things it's by far a more exiting car to look at, be in & I'm guessing to drive. Actually I couldn't care less if the BMW or Porsche drove better, it would always be the Mustang for me :)

As SteveS said, it's a heart based decision, although with that logic I should go for the V8, I simply can't afford it! 300+ bhp is plenty for me anyway!

My only hope is that the Mustangs don't become as common as every other car we see on the roads today, so in that case I think you should go BMW ;)

I'm also hoping that it doesn't become known as a dicks car in the future as lots of cheap second hand ones are available. All the signs are there - lots of mod potential, lots of power for the price, flash looks. Maybe with us lot driving them around initially, we may be able to establish it as a middle-aged blokes car, so anyone with a penchant for baseball caps won't want to be seen dead in one.

My 2008 135i interior was RUBBISH compared to my mustang gt premium package with leather recaros.

I used rubbish like you foreigners :D :D

anyways, I program/code new BMWs as a side job so I sit in quite a few new BMWs even 2015 m3/m4 and it's all BLOODY HELL overpriced for what you get! (snuck bloody hell in there that time :D)

to me bmw interiors don't get nice until the 5 series...and the 5/7 series are fat pigs that I wouldn't care about anyways. enjoy your RHD mustangs gents, and get premium package if you can.

I will make sure I leave my baseball hat at home then ;) I'm 28 but don't worry, I'm not one of those guys!

You make a good point though, it will no doubt happen eventually. I think we will be safe for a few years though...

A few of my thoughts:

Firstly, a new Cayman, base 2.7 model is ÂŁ7k more expensive than the best equipped Mustang GT. Before I bought my present 370, I went to Porsche and had set my heart on the S. Sitting in one of these is an event! end off, everything about that variant screams quality, I nearly had a small man leak when I did. The downside was when I specced it up to a not top notch but perfect for me, it came in at ÂŁ65k :eyebulge: Everything about them oozes class. However, and this happens on a few forums, people keep quoting them in the same price bracket as a ÂŁ35k car, they are NOT in that bracket.

BMW, what can I say, they all merge into one in my minds eye, just, and not wanting to offend, but utter blandness personified. I've driven the M3 on a super car day out event, the V8 model and believe it or not, other than the madness of the Lambo that was on the same day, it was the best of the bunch, which included, V8 Aston Vantage and Audi R8 (V8). The looks however were uninspiring, but a hoot none the less. How much is the newer twin turbo M4?, ÂŁ65k?, no thanks.

Those worrying about attention, better get used to it and it's all good. My present Nismo, which has the full Nismo decal kit on it as well as being white with contrasting rear wing (big f*ck off wing at that!), sills, diffuser and front splitter, gets gawped at, photographed, complimented and generally gets some serious attention. There's nothing better about cars when someone compliments, what is actually the fruit of your labour, and wants to look at it, inside and out with descriptive words and noises such as 'wow', 'that's gorgeous' etc. never had a negative moment of attention, the Mustang will be the same.

Also, make it individual, make every entrance theatrical, be Steve McQueen for a minute or two, basque (sp?) in the moment, you'll be a long time dead, the end

I doubt a 5.0l car will ever become the car of choice for neds, too many cheaper Japanese marks available and of course, cheap Ford ST's

I've got 8 or 9 baseball caps, what's wrong with that? and I'm ancient (kids say I'm a nedthough )

Doubt the Neds could afford the mid to low teens MPG of the 5.0, when driven properly, or the insurance.

I own a few baseball caps and have the V8 on order and I am only 29 and this is turning into a nice 30th present with the ETA of my car. I love my cars and always have done so don't worry I won't fall in to the yob category lol. I know I am bound to get that look, you know that one where people think "oh it must be daddy's car" because I do look young for my age haha

Exactly how I feel, however, be prepared for the attention it will generate, and the idiots that want to drive up your arse and cut you up!
I know the idiots you mean lol

I must be one of the oldest on here at 57 lol.Surprised at some of you being so young.I don't really want to be looked at but I know that comes with the car.Its been a long time coming and yes I could have bought the last generation or a classic, but I guess it must have been RHD and it's official launch in the UK that made my mind up.Its funny I've never owned or wanted a BMW.

I'm 52 and have owned an e36 since bought in 1998 but I have never wanted a newer BMW.

In fact my test would be walking into a place of work that involved going through a massive multi storey car park. I would never once see a new or newish car that floated my boat apart from the odd 911.

The Mustang really is a breath of fresh air.

I'm 52 as well  However, in my head I'm 25, the Mustang seems to have a broad appeal, that's been the case on my last three cars.

Never been a fan of BMW, love the Cayman but I need a bit more practicality, with a three year old granddaughter who wants to go everywhere with grandpa, the Mustang offers me this capability over my current ride while keeping me well within GT performance.

The Mustang is for Euro trips, to stand out from the crowd, I like that!

I'm so old (44) that I don't even know what a ned is

With regards attention, my Mustang has only ever garnered the good type. Lots of thumbs up, photos being taken and kids asking me to rev it

I have just turned 60, and so this will (probably) be my last "good/fun" car. I did have a new Camaro Z28 V8 from '99 to 2002, and really enjoyed it. I didn't find the LHD "too bad", and was considering a new Camaro a while ago, until GM dropped Chevrolet in the UK & Euro markets. They were offering 20% off all their new cars, and I did consider it, until I heard rumours of the RHD mustang... so I held off.

I quite enjoyed the attention in the camaro; I remember one time we stayed at the Grand Hotel in Brighton for a work's do, and the concierge insisted on keeping it parked at the front next to a couple of Rollers and a Lambo....! he said "it matched the ambience..."

I think it does look quite different to most of the "common" sports cars on the road today, so we wil get quite a lot of head turning, but that also means you can't be too stupid on the roads simply because you are so noticeable!

I am starting to wish I hadn't asked for delivery of my convertible to be held off until 1st April next year; as deliveries get closer I am getting more & more jealous.
