It's been a few years since I last updated the maps in my Sync3. This was apparent to me when nav failed on me last week when I wound up getting lost b/c Sync3 pointed me to a road that no longer exists.

I remember being able download (for free) the map updates. Darned if I can find it now. Ford wants $110 for the update, which I ain't shelling out. Anyone know where to DL the updates for free? Thanks.

I agree with you 100%. I just like to have the factory nav at least semi-current, not 5+ years old like mine is currently.

I have a 2024 F250 and the factory nav isn't really that bad, but the Android Auto integration is really nice on the Sync4 systems. It's clunky and fugly on Sync3.

Agreed, that was a tough one to get used to as I went from Sync4 to Sync3 in the mustang.

Why would you do that? Just curious. I was blown away by how modern Sync4 is. Sync3 is like Atari graphics vs. PS5.

Factory nav sucks! Use Apple car play or Android Auto, as they are soo much better and FREE!
+1 for what @Bob Lob Law said. Apple car play all the way.
OP I get what you mean for the factory nav stuff but all 2016+ cars are carplay eligible. Our 2016/2017 cars just need the new module which is super easy to install. I did it in minutes.

I updated my Sync 3 while car parked in the garage and connected to my house network. Much quicker and easier than via that thumb drive hassle.

To update my Nav via cyanlabs, will I have to do the full Sync OS too? Can it be done wireless via home network?

Cyanlabs only works via USB and must be MY 2019 and older APIM. Also, to do a Sync and Map update the program with downgrade to older Sync version, format the system, clean installs with new version along with maps. Also, make sure to do a master reset after it comes up for the first time when finished. Then all is normally good after, usually the whole process takes about 30 - 45 minutes. I just plug it in and go for a ride... Works the same for all Ford products including my Lincoln MKC.. Enjoy!!!

If that is the case then I think I will skip it.

I also prefer G maps but I heard that the latest Ford Nav update was supposed to have much more up to date road accuracy. I like to have it mainly as a backup on a vacay run.

Highly recommend the CyanLabs app linked above!! The software is well thought out and easy to use. If you've used Forscan or similar program, this is even easier. Like any powerful software updater, this program has the power to brick something if you're not careful. If you're not comfortable with that, just go to the Ford dealer and pay them $500 to update your HU.

I am comfortable with this type of software but I'm not stupid. I followed the program's recommendation to create a "Discovery USB" that basically queries your head unit to get it's model#, memory size, current versions of all the software and so on.

The program then makes recommendations based on what it found. It asks you what regions of the US you want to download maps for (or Canada/Mexico/EU) Big selling point: It downloads the updates straight from Ford which is very reassuring. The entire process from downloading the program, creating/using the discovery drive, downloading the updates and applying them took about 2.5 hours total and was totally worth it.

I really like the new UI. It's not quite as polished as Sync4 but it's a lot better than the stock Sync3. Very attractive looking IMO. Most importantly, everything seems to be working as normal post-update and I have my current maps, which was the point of this whole exercise.

Thanks again, @Ferrcad
