Sign up at owner.ford.com and register your VIN. It will tell you if Sync is up to date and how to update it if necessary. I don't think car play is available yet.

Here is the note on owner.ford.com about Apple CarPlay:

Apple CarPlay is available on 2017 model year Ford vehicles with compatible SYNC 3. Owners of 2016 model year Ford vehicles with SYNC 3 are required to perform a software upgrade and purchase a hardware upgrade to use Apple CarPlay. Please check back on the Ford Owner site this summer for more information about these upgrades.

Oh f'ing great. I was told by sales and Ford CS that all I would need was the software f'ing update and it would be free. And now they want me to purchase an f'ing hardware update. What a nickle-diming pile of BS.

Wow, if this is true that we need to buy a hardware upgrade, boy am I glad I got the navigation option on the car. I really have no reason now to want Car Play if it costs extra.

After being told it was a free software update when buying the car... Fuck you Ford.

Seriously, that is complete and utter bullshit.

EDIT: I hope that Android Auto is still free. I wouldn't be surprised if some bullshit thing that Apple required didn't make it into the 2016 models. If not, I suppose this is Ford trying to make sure that people don't use Android Auto/CarPlay to bypass buying a Navigation. Which is bullshit because I already have Nav in my car.

I just took a look, and here's the note...

I bet the CarPlay upgrade is a special cable. Sounds like something they'd require for licensing, or DRM.

**edit - According to Android Central, the 2017 Escape is the first vehicle to get Android Auto integration. My local dealer has some 2017 Escapes on the lot, and they've been dealing with my Sync 3 issues (unsuccessfully). I might go over there and speak with the GM about it...

Android auto can work over blue tooth. Apple car play has to be plugged in.
