With the ability to run phone applications, such as phone-based navigation software, why would you order the costly NAV application from Ford? Or am I incorrect?

From time-to-time you may be in an area that has no mobile data service. The built-in Nav still works in that case.

You can save maps to offline use on google maps. So your point is invalid. And ford has not introduced support for apple or google maps applications.

Only if you do it ahead of time. If you are in an area with no service and decide you need maps there is no way to save them for offline use.

I care about infotainment
I had no idea when/if Android Auto would be coming to SYNC 3, so I reluctantly ended up adding Nav to my order about a week after I placed the initial order. I'm glad I made that decision as there is still no word from Ford on when Android Auto will officially get released.

When I ordered my car it was like a $795 option.

We're not talking a $4000 option here.

If $795 is going to make or break your car purchase, you probably can't afford the car anyways.

I've used my nav 2 times in the 10 months I've had my car, but ordering a car without navigation was not an option for me.

What the hell is the purpose of a big pretty screen without navigation?

I didn't get it not because I couldn't afford it, I omitted that option because the best Garmin Nuvi is still $300 less and has lifetime updates with traffic and offers a superior product for navigating, POIs, search by name functionality, etc. No need to see Ford to get a new update that doesn't even show bodies of water correctly.

The NAV in SYNC 3 is not the same as in SYNC 2 (MFT). I haven't heard or seen anything official on how map upgrades will be done or if they will charge or not. I doubt they will be free (will Ford suprise us?) but mapping is loaded on the unit itself.

Hey everyone!

SYNC 3's map data is embedded and will be easy to update via USB. When a navigation update is available, you will be notified on the process to obtain it.

No word on Android Auto or CarPlay yet. We're still working with Apple and Android to get both features implemented. Always keep an eye on our Media site for announcements: Media.Ford.com

Will the map updates cost anything?

And still way more expensive than the top hand-held GPS units on the market. Might as well offer an iPhone lightning cable for $99 like Audi does.

jmr061 & Sloan91,

We haven't received any details on that quite yet. More info will be provided when the update is available.

Don't take any offense to this as I know you have no control over it but consumers need to know that information before making a purchase. That certainly could influence their decision.

Only had the car few days, just found out the "Destinations" Applink to stream GPS from phone doesn't work with SYNC3.

Any easy way to run googlemaps or any other iPhone NAV app through the SYNC3? Besides just using the app on phone and getting the audio via bluetooth?

Thanks
-Jon
