What are the dangers of running the stock catback on a turbo setup?

I was just reading a thread that warns against this but It didn’t say if there are dangers of engine or turbo damage or if you just will be losing power.

Im buying a single 7675 gen3 car and the guy has the stock active exhaust on there.

Definitely want a catback that will flow. Turbo cars don’t like back pressure. Floating valves is bad lol.

I wouldn’t build a turbo car without a drive pressure gauge. You’ll know really quick if your exhaust is a problem.

When your bringing alot more air in, you need to be able to move alot more air out. A smooth free flowing exhaust will help everything work better and as was said already reduce the risk of back pressure making things move in directions not intended

I’m looking at doing some electric cutouts for spirit driving. Probably the Granatelli setup. And just keep the stock catback for cruising. Wonder if I can rig something up to actuate the valve under boost incase I forget to do so.... sounds like a good arduino project.

I think it should be easy to do something vacuum actuated. You could basically modify the type of actuators that supercharged cars use to close the bypass valve under boost.

I would run boost actuated cutouts like you can option in the hellion sleeper kit. I have them and they work well!

My only issue with going this route is that I would like to have the option of it being loud when I want it to be. Not just when I’m in boost.

Use electric cutouts with a switch then.

My factory catback was causing valve float at 8psi boost.

Changing to 3" mandrel bent turbo-back exhaust made the issue go away and i can now see 13+ psi without float.

if your doing something with cutouts or dumps, i think your fine, if you don't i would def recommend something with straight through mufflers

I’ll do a write up on it when it’s done but I’m going to weld 2 vbands into the exhaust so I can easily and quickly switch from open down pipe to full exhaust. As far as straight through mufflers go I believe the active mufflers in track mode are fairly free flowing. It won’t see more than the 6psi gate pressure with the full exhaust.

Valve float on these cars is definitely a real thing unfortunately. You should be doing as much as you can to let the turbo setup to breath well. The stock system is pretty restrictive unfortunately.
