Steering play

I've noticed in a couple of reviews they stated the 2015 had "excessive" steering play. All of the cars I have owned have had "direct" steering with virtually no play in them. I have driven cars with steering play and its a trait I really don't enjoy it. Now for the questions..


1) Did the 2014 have excessive steering play?
2) What is the typical aftermarket solution (if there is one) to tighten up the steering?


Never had to deal with or improve in this area...

I have a 2013 and I wouldn't say that there is much, if any, play in it (especially in Sport mode). I couldn't imagine it has gotten worse.

they probably didn't the the steering mode in sport+ or track.

also, the PP has a different EPAS tuning, so that might change the feel as well.

Same here, 2013 has no play at all in sport

depends how sensitive you are to play haha I can guarantee you the mustang will have more play than my lotus did.

So true, it's relative to what you are used too/perceive. My JCW Roadster will react to any and all inputs. When I drive other vehicles, the steering seems a bit disconnected.

I haven't interpreted any review as to have excessive play, but rather no feedback on center. "Play" would imply that the wheel moves back and forth (slop or backlash) at any point in its travel, where steer input has no corresponding response from the chassis. My father's 30-yr old Kubota compact tractor does this. Rather, this is simply a lack of feel in the center position, or that's how it has sounded to me. The EPAS was introduced on the '13 MY car, and this should be a more refined version of that same basic system...

I agree that "play" is probably not an accurate descriptions of the concern. Feel might be what they were trying to convey, but it could also be "stiffness". Not in terms of resistance felt at the wheel by the driver, but rather the stiffness between the steering wheel and the tires on the ground. Perhaps there is an area of low stiffness (due to bushings, mounting of the rack, or whatever) that lowers the responsiveness.

Sometimes you can get a similar feeling when changing from worn tires to new ones that have much more squirm due to having taller tread blocks. Hopefully there will be some in-depth reviews that shed a bit more light on this, once the cars are more available.
