This is interesting. I have refrained from mounting my differential more solidly as I figure allowing it to move a bit will help absorb some of the initial shock load and help save the diff. The suspension is a different story as I have most of the steeda replacement bearings, links, and arms.

Really anxious to see this kit installed. Looks like a really nice option.

I like the idea and load path but not a fan of the bolt thread directly in shear. That's ripe for a fatigue failure.

  • You are correct. A design should avoid having the shear stress through the threaded cross section if possible.
  • The pictures shown include our THRU Threaded Differential Bolt Upgrade Kit. This kit was designed as a bolt-in upgrade with no permanent modifications necessary and without having to remove the half-shafts. We had the bolts tested by a third party against the factory 10.9 bolt, our current Differential Bushing Bolt Upgrade Kit - 12.9 Hardware, and a non-heat treated 4140 chromoly version of this same bolt. Our bolts came back within spec as equivalent to a 12.9 bolt. Given the success we have seen with our Differential Bushing Bolt Upgrade Kit - 12.9 Hardware, we felt confident to move into testing.
  • These bolts were tested in single, double, and triple shear on our Silver Bullet. We even tested only the fully threaded design in all four locations on the differential with no issues.
  • Now back to the topic at hand: the Steeda IRS Differential Support Brackets. These have been tested on Donnie Gilder’s nearly 1,300hp S550 Mustang, weighing in at over 3,800lb, which cut a 1.24 60ft time. And that was with these brackets, Differential Bushing Bolt Upgrade Kit - 12.9 Hardware, and our Adjustable Differential Bushing Insert System - Urethane. So it is safe to say this design is just fine.

Good to hear. Seems from the pics like there is enough room to add bolt shoulder length and a crush washer to avoid threads in shear. Maybe not, though.

If you install the bolts from the half-shaft end then the brackets will rest on the shank and not the threads.
