This is true. I went with the Flare tool just because it was easier and I didn't feel like messing with Forscan. But I paid more because of that.

Just FYI

The ticket for having a radar detector in VA is <$100 and no points. It's actually cheaper to get a radar detector ticket than it is to get a speeding ticket.

There are also several detectors that aren't detectable by radar-detector-detectors (say that 3 times fast lol). So if its installed out of sight you won't get noticed. Radar-detector-detectors are also not as common as you'd think, even in VA. Loudoun County is probably the most likely place in VA to run into one, but still not as common as you'd think.
Must differ in NOVA. I know QUITE a few local and state LEOs. The Troopers will NEVER just write you for a detector, they will write MULTIPLE tickets. Friend of mine got popped with one. Said he didn't know about the law, since he just moved here a couple of months ago. He then got a ticket for not registering his vehicle in VA in the time frame allowed, and something else.

Local LEOs around here could care less.

I'm probably not the best source of advice since I've been pulled over nine times, but I HAVE learned a few things.

Don't speed anywhere the speed limit is less than 55. It's just dumb. Generally when the limit is under 55 you're in an area that's congested, residential, or has little to no shoulder.

Don't speed in the interstate unless your field of vision is very long. Cops in my area like to sit just over the crest of a hill.

Let someone else take the fall. There is almost akways someone out there going faster. Let them be the scout. DON'T be the first or last car in a group of speeders. If there is no one going faster than you, don't speed. Stay in the right lane as much as possible.

For the most part, I only speed on the interstate and except for 4th gear bursts I keep it no higher than 78 in a 70. In areas where I know I have a good chance of seeing a cop I take it to within 5mph.

Get a radar detector. People who tell you they're useless are wrong. Waze helps as well if you live somewhere with a lot of users. I dont, but I use it anyway.

I haven't had a ticket in about three years and most of my other interactions were in my 20's, and I think a big part of that is gradually adopting the rules above.

Happy motoring. :)
All good advice. A good, expensive, radar detector is one of several things that will keep you from getting a ticket, as you've stated. Do all these things together and you'll be pretty much ticket free. Just depending in a radar detector will get you a ticket. Buying a cheap radar detector, like a Cobra, is worthless.

I used Waze recently on a road trip and I have to say Im not impressed. You really have to be careful, by the time someone reports the police are often either not there or have changed position or moving and just because Waze says that nothing is there it certainly doesn't mean your safe to violate the speed limit. Finally with Waze, for anyone to report properly you have to engage your phone/app while driving...not a good idea. But at least here in Colorado the speed limits are typically 75, 80 in places in Utah. But yeh Waze didn't impress me at all.
I guess it has more than a lot to do w/the area.... I was trying to get a screen shot of my Waze startup screen... it says 85,000+ users. I'm in Washington DC/MD/VA metro area..... I use Waze in conjunction w/a radar detector (legal in MD). Saved my butt several times.....

I'll have to call Saleen on Monday. The car did come with I think a Kenne Bell tuner. The car is tuned from Saleen but I hope there's a setting in the tuner that will help adjust the speedo.

Getting on the interstate in the morning is where I have to be careful. I'll ramp it up to 80 real fast if no one is in front of me. I try to be patient and follow the slow guy in the right lane for the first mile for a mental pace on how slow I should be driving.

I tested the Uniden R3 speed limit function. Set a max speed. Such as 15 mph over 65, e.g. 80. Exceed 80 and it will say "Warning: Overspeed", and then make a loud beeping until you slow down. I would like such a feature in a smart radar detector that knows the speed limit, and issues a similar alert for being <x> mph over at any speed. 45->60, etc. Waze has such a function but it is easy to ignore.

Other ways to slow down other than slow down?

That is dumb... sorry

I WILL grant you that these cars are very hard to not speed in, that meaning 85mph feels like 65mph for some reason.

I am a Police Officer so leading by example is important. I find myself having to dial back sometimes in my GT. :headbonk:

I use the Escort brand...........Helpful but not full proof . Used other brands over the years , not as reliable. The new Redline Ex is now available .

I've been playing around with the Uniden R3 the past few weeks. Damn nice detector if you like range, quietness and ease of use. I don't like the sound of the alerts and my polarized sunglasses black out the display but other than that it's one of the better units I've tested in a while.

I won't give up my Valentine One because I'm old and set in my ways but I'd have no problem endorsing the V1.

The hardest part of owning a sports car is self control. I'll only do short burst of speed of where I know the roads and have full visibility. The other times I remind myself that I'm driving a bright red sports car and all eyes are literally on me in the herd of boring vehicles...

Race Red is asking for it. :)

I'm hoping my Ruby Red is a bit more subtle. Black would be stealthy.

You're in a bad part of the country for speeding. VA is no bueno.

I've got quarterly meetings around the state every few months and after an overnight delay flying back from Dallas I now drive any trip 3 hours or less. Flying in state is just too time consuming now with all the flight delays.

Fortunately with Texas high speed limits and relative speed tolerance I make really good time between Houston, Dallas and Austin and can save my United FF status for more serious voyages.

I loved my V1 but had to sell it and get the R3 for radar detector, detector invisibility here in VA. I really miss the arrows.

In VA, yeah no kidding. R3 is a great detector for the money though. BTW, does the VSP really hand out reckless driving for 80 mph? Or is that just a story they circulate to scare out of state commuters?

Oh yes. 80 mph in VA in "Reckless Driving" and will kill your insurance rates and you can lose your license. Max I'll drive is 78 mph.
