I've read the exact opposite. 5 miles on two different size tires and it will be destroyed. I think what I read was an excerpt from the owners manual, but I'm not positive.
best to get to the bottom of this before putting an 18" spare on a Torsen / LSD. Needing a new diff would be high price for avoiding a tow. :headbonk:

probably the LSD is safer. I think if those prematurely wear, it just wears back to Open.

I had a tire completely fail at highway speeds last year on my previous DD (Kia Forte :frusty:).

Changed to the spare tire and was back on the road in less than 10 minutes.

Will be driving the S550 from South Florida to Southern Ontario this summer so I have ordered the spare tire kit from :ford: since I only got the compressor/goo with my car.

Spare tires on the PP without hurting the car?...Anyone??

Sorry for the hi-jack, just seems like something that's not logistaically possible (with only one spare wheel) but at the same time no one is saying that or has tried it.

Thanks

whenever you need to leave the city, just get a trailer for your car and put a full size spare and floor jack back there

Not a lot of good options for PP's or 20" OEM foundry guys. Lets see....

1. Full size front 9" PP, Your covered for front flat, probably not the rear, the Diameter is different. Different diameter on Torsen will ruin it...Fast!

2. Full size rear 9.5 PP, your covered for rear flat, probably not the front though...Rub!

3. Any full size tire in the back won't fit into spare tire location...If you keep it unsecured, you lose all that storage space for you travel stuf and also risk having it come word in an otherwise survivable front collison, and having your neck broke by the spare hiting you.

4. If you use the goop in the compressor for a small leak, the tire is ruined.

5. Probably the best option is the donut spare if you have any OEM wheels except the 19" PP's. At least with the donut wheel you could limp to a repair place for a erminet fix or replacement tire.

6. Another option is a good tire Plug Repair kit. You could plug it, use the compressor without the goo and get to a repair shop for perminet fix or replacement.

My self, I got rid of my 2015 w/PP and now have the 2016 non PP w/ 20" OEM's, I also have the donut spare and a plug kit, and a compressor.

I have the factory spare, (no PP) and I also have a compressor and tire repair plug kit in a small bag in the trunk. The kit comes with the temp spare and jack. I haven't had to use any yet, but have with previous cars. I drive a lot in areas of TN, GA and AL which are rural with poor cell coverage, so I like to be able to take care of any problem I can rather than be stuck on the side of the road for hours waiting for a tow.

In the Torsen T-2 PDF tech sheet on page 2 under 'features' section it says 'MINI TIRE COMPATIBLE'.

Does that not refer to mini spare tire?

There are other posts on this forum that say driving for a little while on the Torsen for short distances at reduced speed should be fine to get you to a service station.

For the spare option what I did was I traded my rear 19.5 PP wheels/tires for another GT owners' front 19x9 wheels and tires. Then I bought the Spare Tire from Ford. So now I have 19x9 PP wheels on all 4 and can rotate tires too.
The spare will not fit on the front because of the brembo's but if I have a flat on front I will take off a rear and put it on front, put the spare on rear.

The guy I traded with now has 19.5 all the way around but in order for 19.5 to work on the fronts he had to use spacers.

Intresting! I think the unknown here is the speed and distance that you could drive on it. If the Torsen is ruined, I'm not sure how you'd be able to tell. But if it is ruined it just becomes usless weight. Not worth finding out the hard way though...agreed?

So the ONLY solution to having a spare wheel work on the PP is to take off the 19.5" rear wheels and put on 2 19" wheels which would allow for a full size 19 wheel to work on either front or rear.

I could be wrong here but compared to the base model with a $70 donut that seems like one hell of a hassle.

At least its an option though.

Thanks for sharing.

Sorry I am mixing up my info. On the GT PP the stock diameter wheels are both 19" but the WIDTH is 9" on the front and 9.5" on the rear.
The rear PP wheels 19 x 9.5" will not fit on the front. You have to use a spacer and then they will fit.

What I did cost me nothing because I found another GT PP owner that wanted to trade his fronts (9") for my rears (9.5"). We both had close to the same miles (his about 3000 newer) so we did an even trade.

Yes all I have to go by is the PDF I just posted that says the Torsen T2 is 'MINI Tire Compatible' but I'd like to know for sure...so I just emailed Torsen from their website...lets see if they reply back.

Here's what I sent. Would sure like to get a definitive answer on this once and for all.

2015 Mustang GT with Torsen T2

Hello,
I read in your T2 tech sheet under features section that the Torsen T2 is mini tire compatible.
Does this mean in the event of a flat I can use a Ford mini spare tire temporarily?

The mini spare total diameter is about 25” and my normal tire size is 27”.
So there is a difference of about 2” diameter.

If I ever have to use the spare mini tire on the rear could this damage the Torsen?

Thanks!

Oh ok.

So you have 19" x 9" all the way around. Still pretty similar to my initial impression of what you had said. So you just bought spacers for rear, and the other guy bought spacers for the front?

How many car/mustang owners are willing to do such a swap though? Seems like something that would be rarer than hen's teeth to find.

No you don't need any spacers if all wheels are 19x9. 19x9 fit on front or rear without spacers.

You might be surprised about people wanting to swap. I found someone here on this forum quickly that was local. He wanted 19x9.5 square set up.
I had posted about the fact that I might buy 2- 19x9 wheels and tires and sell 2- 19x9.5 wheels and tires. Someone responded asking how much I would sell them for and then we decided to just trade. Saved both of us a lot of money!

Thanks!

I have the spare tire in my car, but since I've upgraded my rims and tires to be larger diameter (28.5 in rear, 27.5 in front) over stock's ~27 in diameter, the spare is definitely a no go. Also I plan on upgrading to the PP brakes soon as well, so that's another strike.

But for the spare with my current brakes, I'm contemplating replacing the tire that's on the spare rim, and using a 28.5 in tire, like this:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...&partnum=585MR8CST17&AID=10398365&PID=7913187

Probably wont fit in the spare tire well unless you deflate it, though.

Also, I've toyed around with the idea of buying a drag skinny to use as a spare tire (there's one that clears the PP brakes, if I recall), but it's not a cheap solution.
