USB-C is the future!! There was an Android auto thread that devolved into a cable discussion a month back. As many have already mentioned, it's likely your cable thats causing the problem.

I got the cable that Jimmerheck referred to and it is still working great with my Google Pixel. USB-C was a pretty big leap in the standard and many companies are not producing cables that are really up to spec yet.

My OEM Pixel cable does it too. Funny that the cheap no-name cables work better than the OEM.

Which port do people use - the one in the centre console storage or the one in the tray in the dash?

I use the center console port so I can just stick my phone in there and forget about it.
I think the OEM cables are failing due to the stiffness of properly constructed USB-C cables. That's the main reason I started searching for a short cable. My OEM Pixel cable was starting to look twisted up and I was worried it was going to fail. I've got a friend with a Galaxy S7 that always uses his phone while it's plugged in. It gets all twisted up and then he needs to get a replacement. He's been through quite a few.

Tray in the dash under the screen. 1ft cable is perfect length to go to my Magicmount phone mount to the right of the radio screen.

So based on this thread and my frustration, I ordered these, 6" long, which are the PERFECT length for the front USB.
It is the first time AA worked using the front USB socket!! I previously thought it was defective, never got it to work with any of my other cables!

Just drove 3 hours, and no dropping of AA, the phone fits perfectly in the pocket, life is good.
