Snow Tires

So I live in KC and with the weather here it never fails to dump a few inches of snow while Im at a movie or out to eat in the winter time. So theres always a couple times you get caught up in snow in the mustang since its my daily driver. For that reason Im thinking about getting some snow tires to throw on from Dec - March. What are the best for the money? Also should I look at just throwing two on a different set of wheels or just have them mounted to my PP wheels? I had a 2011 GT with all season pirellis and did OK with the little bit of snow we got last winter.

I'd get a second set of wheels for the tires. I have the michelin x ice xi3 and they work well.

I'd do a search in the wheels and tires subforum. There are a bunch of winter tire threads there.

You are better off with buying a dedicated set of winter wheels and tires to save yourself the cost of dismounting the stock summers and another cost of mounting the winter tires. The best tire for this car would be the blizzark winters. But Tirerack has only 255s...DiscountTire has 245s but no blizzarks.

I'm planning on getting 17" steelies and blizzaks. Winter will be fun!

With a PP, you'll have to double-check fit on the front brakes. ALmost all 19s will fit, and some 18s, but you need to ask. You want something skinnier than you have, in any case, for snow tires. Blizzak and Michelin make great tires.

I have the Blizzak LM32s for my GT PP, they worked very well from December until April (I'm in Canada)... I mounted them on the factory GT PP rims...

Winter beater or not, you should ideally be using winter tires.

If you are literally buying a winter beater for what it would cost for some winter tires and wheel for you mustang, I'd be concerned about reliability. Could potentially go sideways quickly in terms of maintenance/repair costs.

Not to mention, I didn't buy the car to only drive it 6 months of the year. I mean sure, it's a nice car, but it is not some exotic that needs to be a garage queen.

^ Truth...I've been there done it and it is pointless. Just like saving miles on the car thinking it will have more value. Especially for these everyday cars that are everywhere in the used and new market.

I'd rather spend 2 grand on a beater. It goes in a ditch it goes in a ditch, instead of my 40 thousand dollar car especially with the other idiot drivers who don't know how to drive in the snow. And you don't necessarily need snow tires, I've do just fine with non snow tires in NY winters with 4x4. Just my opinion.

I can't see how yall put up with the cold much less the snow which effects the sports car you own to whether you have to put ugly ass wheels and snow tires on it or have a 2nd car just for the winter....just some of the several reasons I'll never move out the south or sc!

How does the snow affect the sports car?

Here in MN we have some people who drive GTRS, Maserati's, Audi RS5 in the snow with no worries or issues. Having a second car for winter is not worth it. The winters are 6 months long, life is short to not enjoy your car all year around ...newer cars have better traction control than a beater car...If I was driving a Corvette, that would be a different case because the ground clearance on the Corvette does not leave room for 6" of snow.

That's the problem with Missouri and the I-70 corridor. 7 out of 10 years, we don't get enough snow to warrant full winter tires. But that 1 off 13 inch snow storm screws you.

I have always had 2 sets of wheels. Run full summers April - November. Good all seasons December - march. More for the low temps than the snow amounts. Normally I just take another car when it snows, but as you know, it's cold in the winter here, and summer tires get slick below 40.
