I hate to call this backlash, but it seems to be moving like backlash in the joint at the differential. This can’t be in the ring & pinion gears, I can’t imagine it would even drive with that much slop. I’m guessing something in the u-joint or whatever format it is. Makes a clunk sometimes from reverse to drive, but not tons of other noise. I’m just concerned that it will fail soon and leave me on the side of the road again. I have an extended warranty and would like to get this taken care of if it is a real problem. I’ve ever seen a driveshaft with this much slop in any of my old cars that still had intact ujoints. Is this an easy repair?

Thanks!

I think mine is the same. It does appear to be a lot of movement, but I just figured it's normal.
Hope it's normal.

I've got 3 pumpkins and they all have that amount of slop. I don't like it either.

Backlash of .008" is measured on the ring gear. On a 9" anyway. I would say you have issues due to wear or abuse. How many miles?

58k miles, abuse would be pretty minimal in my book - she’s a commuter car that makes periodic roadtrips - so normal. I’ve built or restored several differentials and never seen anything like this. I haven’t taken this driveshaft out before so I can’t tell what is under that shield.

Shop said they would look at it, but I won’t get word from them until Tuesday or Wednesday when I go to pick up the car.
