Silly question, has anyone ever ran the stock seatbelt through the harness opening in the seat? It would be pretty simple to unbolt the bottom of the belt and route it through.

Uuuhhh, yes. The comfort seats don't have harness pass through. But I suppose the question would apply to any seat that has a harness opening.

I get what you’re saying there l, but it seems to me that to do what you’re asking would put the seatbelt in an awkward spot (like just inside of the left shoulder) which might make it uncomfortable for you because it might rest against the side of your neck.

I think the Schroth quick fit pro harness is the better way to go. I put one in mine on the driver’s side, but left the factory belt in place, in case I decided I want to use it. I haven’t felt the need to go back to it though. The Schroth is expensive, but a very nice harness. I knew my wife wouldn’t want to wear one and for that reason, I just did the driver’s seat. If you do go this route, some trim panel modification may be necessary.

Nice install and completely agree. I have a cage already, so harness install should be straight forward. It was just a beer thought....and I did preface my post with "silly", lol.

FYI: I used to be a volunteer driving instructor at BMW CCA driving schools at racetracks in California. Four-point harness with no rollbar or cage is scary and none of the instructors would use them.

Thank you! There’s no such thing as a silly question IMO. You asked a question in search of an answer. Heck, you even made me look into it a bit and ai see there is talk out there about using the factory 3 point harness with race seats with harness openings. Apparently, there are some seats that may be able to accommodate this, but I stopped looking at that point.

With your cage, you can do the wrap around style harness or the quick fit pro and still retain the factory belt in case you need it. I’m not sure if there is a big difference in price between the two, but at the very least, the wrap around would not require you to modify trim panels.

I wanted to leave my factory belt in place, in case I encountered a problem with the latch or cam-lock, I would still have a backup belt in place.

I think the issue I'd focus on with this question is "What about HANS?". A three point belt, if it's through an opening in the seat, doesn't sound safe.

If you have a sudden stop with the regular 3 point belt, it pitches you forward into the airbag to protect your neck. If it's connected in a way that prevents you pitching forward, your neck is at risk. And I don't think there's an actual HANS-like system that works with just one shoulder belt.

Or am I missing something?

@JAJ Naaa, you didn't miss anything bud. It was just a silly question and you provided some extremely valuable info that may add to the conversation. I want to say I had learned that for track days and such, organizations mandate that if you have a full harness, you must have a HANS. I understand the logic. Totally get what you added for that very reason.
