I asked the same as the OP a while ago. In complete agreement with those stating Ford is going ridiculously cheap on this car by cutting in those areas. I don't buy the "we get the v8 cheap" angle. That engine has been in production so long now and is in the F150 too...Ford is not losing on that engine despite some tweaks on it like a dual intake now. I had the lit row on my 16 GT and it is much more intuitive to look at the gear select there while shifting than up on the dash. However, my 21 Mach 1 fit and finish is actually better than my 16 overall. One example of many on that car: whoever picked my door/window seal on my 16 was either blind or really didn't give two shits about who got that car. It was so malformed there is no way it would pass any kind of QC if Ford had it.

The Coyote has long since had the design portion of its life paid for. That’s not what it means to say we get a cheap V8. What it means is almost all sports cars in the HP range of a Mustang are much more expensive. It is hard to find a V8 sports car these days for $40k, and it’s becoming more and more difficult. I don’t believe the Camaro or Challenger/Charger are significantly better (or worse) at a similar price range. Most other V8 equipped cars cost more.

I have a wife and three kids, I provide for the family. I cannot afford an $80k V8 sports car, with or without backlit shifter letters… I am happy that Ford offers the Mustang at the price it does and if it means my shifter letters don’t light up then so be it (especially cause I have a manual…).

Point being, the cost of building the car has likely gone up from the current climate and it’s still at a point I can afford and one that people are still buying. The S650 will sell like hotcakes too.

Look at Tesla, it has minimalistic interior without any buttons, controls, just one big display, all is in software and nobody makes a fuss about it. Lighting in a glove box or near PRNDS is useless for anyone, so they removed it, it's no issue, it might not have been there in the first place. Look at what each gen and facelift and limited edition added, it changed the car in just a few years completely to a much better car.

The price of the car has gone up with inflation. Did Ford lose $1.48 on every 2017 model while they now make a profit because they cut out that one light? No. The car is offered as it is at the price it is because you buy it. Simple as that. Ford isn't hooking you up with a deal because you're cool, they produce a product and make a profit. We as consumers have the right to demand the car we payed for but there will always be some apologetic who doesn't mind taking it for someone else's gain I guess.
