so far...
a few months ago, i installed the Ford Performance Power Pack 2
i ordered an SCT BDX. it never arrived/UPS lost it.
i ordered another BDX.
got a unsupported vehicle error
SCT help desk says that the BDX will not work with the "Ford control packs" since, it's an aftermarket tune.. i corrected them and said it's "power pack 2"
they offered to RMA the bdx and send me an X4 with the stock file and said to return it stock, then load custom tune
UPS found the original BDX and delivered it.
fast forward to this week
i got my first 91 tune from PBD
i connected the X4, returned it to stock, then flashed the 91 tune..so far so good
i like the BDX's form factor, i prefer it.
now that the ford calibration is essentially gone. i reached out to SCT help desk again to see if there's a way to swap devices and told them i have a custom tune..
they just repeated what they said before..BDX does not support ford control packs...

anyone know if this is a real compatibility issue?
what are my options? like get a new ecu and have PBD revise the serial number of the BDX in the tune?

your car is too old for BDX. 18+ ONLY. SCT should have told you that in their first breath.
The X4 is your device.

Please make sure you connect your SCT and upgrade the flash as many times as needed till you're caught up. With the BDX mine took like 6 device flashes to catch up to current and it'll do it by itself once it's connected to WiFI. I still have the X4 from my old '17 v6 but as I recall it was a bit more involved to update - needed win laptop etc.

Some tuners have a preference for the x4 over the BDX saying the device firmware is more mature. But that opinion was expressed 2+ years ago so I expect the BDX has matured a bit in the meantime.

their website shows 2016 compatibility. i checked that before ordering it. if the X4 is my best option, so be it....

The BDXs are not just for 2018+ models. I just tuned my 2016 with a BDX and a custom tune from Rob Shoemaker. No problems with compatibility at all and everything went smoothly. Did all the updates over wifi beforehand and kept the car on the battery charger while I uploaded my tune. I'm also pretty sure I've read other threads on here where other 2015-2017 owners tuned their cars with BDXs as well. I'm not sure why shogun32 said they're only for 2018+ models.

Because 2 tuners told me so back in 2019 when I was tuning my cars. I guess 2016 support is a more recent development. Sorry for the outdated info.

All good man, no need to apologize. No big deal.

From what I've read, the SCT problems some have experienced seem to be related to the use of the cloud feature. Some tuners and users were/are having trouble exchanging tune files for whatever reason. They wouldn't download or the tuner couldn't upload them etc. I also read the BDX relies on a strong WiFi connection when flashing tunes. Neither were issues with me because I don't use the cloud feature. I just connect the device to my laptop and load the tune file the same way you would with the X4. Also, I have a strong WiFi connection in my house and garage, so that's also moot for me.

So I'm guessing because of all that, maybe some tuners just wrote the BDX early on and it got a bad reputation from back then. I was initially leery also about getting a BDX over the X4, and I only did so because I was able to score a steal of a deal on an open box one from OfferUp. But so far, I've had zero problems with it. Hopefully it continues that way.

I purchased the SCT BDX and just connect my laptop when uploading tunes and data logging and works great. My tuner did recommend i not use the cloud unless I have a very strong wifi connection.
I also like using all the gauges it offers when need to.

I got my car dyno tuned a couple years back with a BDX purchased from the tuner, but I seem to recall people saying at some point not to update the device, like there was a bad update out there or something? Anybody know anything about that?

I have a new tune to flash to the car, but there are updates for the device as well.

Okay the software said I couldn't update the device without restoring my car to stock form, sooooooo I didn't do it. Not sure what the hell all that is about.

I've seen that a few times with my 2014 Expedition that uses the BDX. I just return the SUV to stock, update the BDX and reinstall a tune.
