Hello everyone! I'm here to address the notorious noise in the S550's specifically in the rear passenger end of the car. I've had my mustang since October of 2015 and in the last year is when I stared to hear the rattle. It didn't bother me too much since I have Corsa full exhaust and turning up my music eliminated it pretty much. Until it got too overwhelming where the noise was louder than the exhaust which says a lot about the sound. I read forum after forum and got nowhere I decided to do my own research and diagnostic (I didn't take my car to the dealer I have bad experiences with them) I attached some photos to show what all I took off and replaced. From the inside I GUTTED the entire thing I didn't know if I looked like a racecar or your local tweaker with how my car looked
I took the A-pillar where the airbag was, stuffed foam there (see pic below) the liner where the speakers meet the rear windshield. I took off the right panel of the rear and all rear seats! I got nowhere!! I checked the welds of the body panel that are in the trunk behind the liner, seatbelt bracket, airbags everything! Until my brother and I noticed it came from outside the car. We took the rear fender liner off and inspected the car and started noticing bushings and joints giving up due to their life expectancy. I went ahead and purchased and replaced my factory parts for Ford Performance Performance Pack Rear Toe Link Kit (15-23 Mustang) and Drake Muscle Cars Billet Aluminum Adjustable Rear Sway Bar End Links (15-23 Mustang) (to get an idea what I bought) This did NOTHING! :( I didn't give up the plus side was I noticed a great feeling in the rear suspension which then promoted me to buy a full handling kit for my car. I figured if I was going to replace some things I might as well replace all of the rear and front suspension all at once. I took a weekend and man I had a smile the handling was great the car drove amazing the only thing was..... the noise was there BUT not as present, loud or as sensitive. I could actually go over bumps and it not be bad. One thing I noticed was with this handling kit I had to used my factory bump stops for my new rear struts. They are horrible! I read more forums about these and basically what Ford does is the bump stops are a secondary "strut" and doesn't allow the car to use the full strut in order to prolong the life of it as much as possible. I went ahead and bought Steedas bump stop, my car was lowered 1.50in in the rear so the one I went with are meant for lowered vehicles there's some for factory or non lowered 550's. I also went and bought new rear strut mounts took me 1 hour in total for both sides taking my time. Tightened and torqued everything to spec, turned my car on and went down the most uneven road as possible and BOOM just like that my car rode like new, smile ear to ear. no noise, rattles. vibrations!! It's been a month and it has not returned at all! I wrote the lengthy forum to show my experience and time I put into this so you don't have to. Overall my biggest suggestions is to upgrade your full suspension if your car is a keeper like mine. If not no worries make sure to maintain your pony and do as I did by replacing your bump stops and rear strut mount since you're down there already, any questions let me know!!
