I'm curious if anyone has used an HID to LED conversion kit on their Mustangs and how their experience was while installing it. I'm trying to convert mine as I've been having issues with aftermarket HIDS since I got the car.

By the way, Ford makes it so unnecessarily difficult to change a headlight bulb...

Thanks!

The projectors aren't designed for LED bulbs.

Also, what kinds of issuses are you having with aftermarket HIDs, and why are you running aftermarket HIDs?

I actually just found a couple kits that work with the D3S projector style that convert the factory HIDs to LED bulbs. I've been toying around with aftermarket HIDs for the different color temperatures and for road visibility as well. LEDs are much more efficient and brighter without the glare.

The HID to LED conversion kits you’re looking at - can you post a link so we can see what you’re up against?

As @offroadkarter mentioned - the 2015-2017 HID headlight assemblies (internal projector specifically) isn’t designed for correct LED transmission. Yes, some kits will allow the “conversion” to utilize the factory HID housing and projector, but the transmission of light outward and onto the road won’t be the same. Sure, it will “light up” the road and “look brighter” when facing the front end of the car. However actual light output will not be as effective if that same LED were installed into a proper LED projector assembly.

This article touches on all of the facts:

Just because some POS after-market kit exists, doesn't mean it works properly. The reflectors are made specifically for the type of lighting system. You can't jump between incandescent, HID and LEDs, you blind other drivers or you get crappy lighting to the road.

Just stick to the OEM units. Lights (especially brake and head-lights) aren't something you mess around with. There's also federal laws you're mucking around with.

Here's the kit I've found

Link

Ill probably end up switching back to the OEM HIDs though, seems like the cheaper and better option.

Junk, don't bother. As others have said just because it fits and lights up doesn't mean it's right. You'll blind other drivers.

Don’t know what they make for the S550 but I put proper HID kits in 2 F350s with great success. Complete PITA but they were from the retrofitsource as well.
