Is this a logical thing to do? I know they are welded to the muffler so new tips would be welded in place...but since there are quad tips it seems like it would be harder for them to weld perfectly straight. State farm will not pay to replace my mufflers since my exhaust tips got damaged from a wreck, and they are all chewed up. I don't really want to buy an aftermarket exhaust as the OEM active exhaust sounds perfect, but having to buy OEM mufflers for this feels retarded. Anyone ever just swap tips before?

I've actually wondered this before so I'm putting this here for an answer as well. I was thinking that I could buy active mufflers and force the valves open (I have a non-active car) for better sound, but I would want new tips.

Thereā€™s a post on here somewhere where a member actually slid aftermarket tips over his OEM ones and mounted it that way. They looked great. If you werenā€™t so far away, Iā€™d give you mine!

It should be on the other person's insurance if it wasn't your fault. Is State Farm your insurance or theirs? I would push back on State Farm either way for that one. It's one piece. They should replace any part that is damaged.

Both my and their provider. This is the second time the adjusters looked at the tips, he told my service adviser itā€™s considered ā€˜normal wear and tear.ā€™ I have a video of the tips being dragged across the road as the tow truck winched my car up. Iā€™ll try calling State Farm again but Iā€™m not hopeful. Itā€™s been in the shop for 4 months with $20k parts and labor and another 4K in rental fees and loss of use.

normal wear & tear might be discoloring or carbon buildup that can be cleaned with metal polish but they should not have dents and scratches

That is a lot of repair bill. Your car Premium / PP ? I thought it might be in the Total loss zone but that appears to vary by state:

https://www.carfax.com/blog/is-your-car-a-total-loss

When is Your Car a Total Loss?

The insurance companies are regulated at the state level, therefore each state sets the criteria for when a vehicle is declared a total loss and a salvage title is issued. That threshold is lowest in Iowa at 50 percent, and highest in Colorado and Texas at 100 percent.

401A GT. The NADA retail value on it is $33k so it is basically on the threshold of totaled. The original estimate was only $13,000 though, and has since grown multiple times as repairs were done.

insurance company may be saying "normal wear and tear" because replacing them would put the car over threshold. In any case, if the mufflers are visibly damaged then insurance should cover those. I would not want a muffler shop doing a welding repair which may impact warranty. Since you are not interested in aftermarket.

What diameter do the tips leave the mufflers? It might be possible to use a sawzall to cut off the factory tips, and then buy new tips of the same base diameter and clamp them on, not weld. Like how most aftermarket exhaust tips are held on.

I was going to try this but the problem is how the tips come out of the muffler. The hole is not center so regular tips wouldnt fit the valence correctly

That makes sense. That's something that I was not aware of.

Search member ā€œTishā€ under Quad exhaust depression thread. They look pretty sweet!
