I'm not talking reliability of the motor. I'm talking reliability of the boosting components

Most of the components are pretty good with majority of the kits out there. Beware of over spinning any blower if you turn the boost up.

My opinion is if it's an auto car turbos are awesome. For a stick car I like a whipple, Tvs, kennel bell because they hit immediately. Centris seem to do really well on this platform as well.

And ignore doctor fishtail. He is either troll or an idiot. No one in their right mind would argue with Brent Davis about the merit of turbos in a mustang.

the way i look at it is what are the manufacturers bringing out, those guys need reliability amongst other things seeing as they offer warranty etc, the majority of new forced induction manufacturer built cars are turbo. manufacturers like BMW, Mercedes etc are pumping millions into turbo development. Ford in Australia produces both, we have 4-cyl & 6-cyl turbo's and blown V8's, if done right both are just as reliable as each other.

also is hard to look past the diesels, you don't see many blown deisels out there, the turbo's are pushing 100's of 1000's of miles.

More fly by night companies in the turbo world. I got burned good with my 3V setup. Took a lot of time and effort to make it work.

Hello everyone! Super excited to say my car was delivered tonight! (even got to drive it off the truck!) my question for you all is as the title suggests: which system has better reliability? I ask this because I see many high mile supercharged vehicles but rarely see a high mile turbo vehicle, unless it's a diesel. Are turbos not the best for long term? Thanks!

Hello. Congrats on joining the S550 club!

In our experience the most reliable setup is a turbocharged setup. No belts to slip or replace. The most reliable and longest lasting vehicles on the road are turbocharged (turbo diesels, industrial vehicles, and the Semi's we have owned have over One million miles with never needing turbo maintenance).

There are very few OE supercharged applications compared to turbocharged vehicles from the OE. This alone shows the reliability. The barrier in the past has been availability of a bolt on turbo system, and we have solved that with our line of systems that we have produced for over 12 years at this level.

Please ask any questions as we are here to help!

Wondering if you could elaborate a little more about this? Doesn't have to include manufacturers names, just maybe things to look out for?

Only reason I ask is I've been on he verge of going FI, but have buddies who say to be careful. They are saying from experience adding FI to a car can be opening up a can of worms and that you have to then basically plan on constantly tweaking the car to keep it running right. Might have to do with our emission testing, but I don't think thats what they were basing their experience on, also none have Mustangs, so it might be apples to oranges. It's just my fear there is going to be other things required to keep my DD a DD that nobody mentions.
Cost isn't everything, some kits run quick don't get me wrong. We hear about potential but haven't seen it yet (at the customer level). If we were all concerned about potential we'd all have a TT kit, really only thing out there customers are consistently running 8's and low 9's currently. (S550 speaking) Hellion has proven to have a dependable and effective kit, TT's just aren't in some people's price range and we understand that.

The debate on whats the best will always go on and its a good thing, its competition. Competition breads growth and innovation, some companies just want to bring the other companies down, theres no need for that.

We sell them all but like every other company, we have our preferences. We like Whipple and VMP, why? Quality, longevity and power delivery. Do you see a lot of guys running 8's or even 9's with a VMP or Whipple? Not really, that's typically not the goal of 95% of the customers. They want a car that makes 650-750RWHP safely and still offer a good lifespan but have that power on hand when they want to play around.

A lot of other aspects to cost: OPG's, CS, Converter (not cheap if auto), Clutch, half shafts, DS, wheels, exhaust, etc. You want to run 8's? You're going to spend money, its a simple fact. Any kit will run 8's if you spend enough money. We currently are running 8.87 on a little ole 2.3 VMP TVS with a 150 shot, not bad if you ask me... and we did that after we drove 3 hours to the track. Tuning is key too, Ken Bjonnes tunes our cars and our customer's cars. That's the number 1 most important aspect to a dependable kit, which is the tune. Whipple's tuning has proven to be innovated, trustworthy, dependable and awesome as well! We made 720rwhp on the stage 2 kit right out the door with a whipple tune. A complete package.

Heck our very first time out on the track with our Vortech JTB 16 (no converter) we started the day off running a 7 second 1/8 and left after 3 runs running 6.5 1/8. That's 100 percent tuning.

Either way, sorry for the long post. With the right tuning and supporting mods, any kit will put a smile on your face. We offer complete kits and packages for every need out there. If you have any questions or just want to chat and see what we can do for ya, don't hesitate to give us a shout!

I would rather replace a belt than a turbo..
And when a turbo lets go for whatever reason it can get real nasty. To be fair to OP. He needs to hear both sides of this topic. (by the way he has already decided to go S/C) I have book marked some links to issues with turbo charging. Again I have been in both worlds. http://www.suprasport.com/Major-Causes-of-turbo-damage_ep_47-1.html As with anything on your there is maintenance. http://zhome.com/ZCMnL/PICS/turboChargerBasics/turboChargerBasics.html Very good read. http://www.esseal.com/techinfo_pdf/Turbo-Damage-Analysis.pdf

Anyone comparing OEM turbo applications vs an aftermarket turbo are a bit misguided. What durability testing is being done in an aftermarket turbo app in long term testing? Testing on street vehicles on the road is not a true test as you can't simulate 100k+ mileage and changing conditions.

In general, if designed right and kept in similar power levels, they both can be very reliable but we passed over 100hr durability testing at wot, from -20 to 130deg f temps, rain, snow, high and low elevation.

man i think once ya tint the windows you're opening up a can of worms lol. between a jeep and this car, i hafta do a lot of reading/learning, one mod always leads to the next. do i sometimes get frustrated? yes, would i prefer them stock? no.

think about how high maintenance consumers have become...no way these kits are gonna require as much upkeep as they did 10-15 years ago. at least that's what i'm teling myself to justify this SC purchase:D

Thanks for the reply. That's kinda the way I'm thinking about it all. I have a jeep that I spent the last 13 years getting just the way I like it. No motor mods on it though, and for the most part there weren't too many surprises along the way. Just kinda different for me to do some kind of engine tweaking on the GT. Have a good one.
