Making this post out of frustration more than anything. This isn't the first transmission I've removed and replaced, but I've never had one this finicky before. I've installed a Circle D converter in my 10r80 and having a bit of difficulty lining everything back up when I try and get the transmission back in place. I have confirmed the converter is fully installed, it is sitting at the same depth as what the factory converter was before i removed it (20mm). Doing this on jack stands which a bit of a pain, doing this on a hoist would have been so much easier. I've tried keeping the transmission as close to parallel to the ground, but it comes in contact with trans tunnel and leaves it about an inch short of the block. If i tilt it slightly, I can get it close, but it feels like the snout of the converter isn't centered in the flexplate/crank and is hung up on one of the flexplate bolts.

Im sure it's just going to take playing with it a bit more to get it to go in. Any pointers would be appreciated though lol

Thanks

Remove the flex plate cover/bellhousing plate (whatever they call it -- see below)

This will allow you to see everything to get the converter bolts lined up with the converter. Once they are all lined up, get one or 2 trans bell housing bolts started leaving enough gap to reinstall the bell housing plate.

The plate is designed so that it can be installed with the trans and motor mated (although loose).

Does that make sense?

This is mostly what I did as well but didn't take off the flexplate cover.
I had a borescope pointed directly at the torque converter bolt through the flexplate hole to help align them while I was maneuvering the trans to fit in 2 bell housing bolts.

You don't have to push the trans all the way in, once you can see two torque converter bolts (3 and 9 o'clock) through their flexplate holes start threading in 2 bell housing bolts at 3 and 9 o'clock (without fully tightening) which would get the transmission casing itself aligned.
Then you can tighten the bellhousing bolts further which should start putting the torque converted bolts via their flexplate holes and you can move the flexplate around to line it up perfectly.

In summary the most helpful thing for me was seeing the torque converter bolts and threading 2 bellhousing bolts at 3 and 9 o'clock in. Once that's done everything else is easy (except the top bellhousing bolts).
Did mine on jack stands as well so I know the pain. Good luck!

Bingo

my problem was I couldn't see shit either. So I dropped the flex plate cover. Super easy to reinstall with the trans bolted on.

Thanks guys. I'll take another crack at it tomorrow. I wasn’t aware that plate was easily removed, I'll give it a try.

Ended up getting everything together tonight. I left the plate in but did use the lower bolts to snug up the transmission once everything was aligned. Glad that's over lol. Thanks again.
