Looking for advice as car is at the dealership getting the 22S37 recall done. My car had ALL of the symptoms: no reverse light, reverse camera not working and various driver assist issues on the dash when starting the car. I just bought the car (not local) and the Carfax showed this being an open recall on my VIN. My dealer showed the work had not been done when looking up my VIN. So easy fix right? Dealer says they went to do the update and it has already been updated. Service advisor even sent me a picture showing software version is up to date (IDS-130.09B). He found it odd that it was not updated in the network but in any case, all these problems still persist. So now I'm paying for them to try and diagnose the issue but just wondering if there is anything I should possibly be looking at for the cause.

I should note that this car has full custom exhaust (headers to mufflers). Also the transmission was replaced several years ago under warranty. All the work done by the previous owner.

I'm not sure it's just a software update; it could be something else: wiring, connector or a module involving the gear position sensor.

Being unfamiliar with the recall, I downloaded it. While it could be the software, it could be anything else which would prohibit the car knowing it is in reverse.

You mention the new aftermarket exhaust and the previous transmission replacement. Those could involve any of the items I pointed out above. Best case, a loose connector plug. Worst case, a damaged wire or something involving the harness supporting the trans.

Unfortunately I'm unfamiliar when the problem started as all the mods were done by the previous owner. I know the transmission was replaced under warranty in 2021. So surely if that was the cause it would have been fixed then when it was at the dealer.

Since the recall didn't fix it, I do suspect there being something loose somewhere or a damaged wire. Just really suspicious that the system said the recall was still open and it wasn't.

There's a surprising amount of wiring in those areas, supporting the exhaust system, emissions, transmission, etc. Easy to forget or mis-route something.

The Ford Diagnostic and Repair System software is pretty detailed. One of it's main functions is the ability to communicate with each module. That, with physical checks of the wiring...hopefully they'll get it sorted easily.

If I understand correctly, with the software version confirmed, the current dealer did not attempt another update.

Not to get into the Technician's business, but I think it'd be a good practice to perform the recall activity again, as part of a baseline.

As you mentioned, some of the history of the car is known, some isn't. Doing the software update now will confirm everything loads correctly, that nothing weird happens or the process isn't interrupted in any way. Who knows what happened when they loaded or attempted to load software previously. Simply re-flashing the modules could logically shake something loose.

When you have time, let us know how things went. If you like, you can post a pic of the car in the following thread.

Good Luck.. :please:.

Service advisor confirmed the update was done because they had to do it in order to clear it out of their recall system. The tech is going to look into it more (diagnosis cost out of my pocket) when he gets the current car in his bay completed. Hoping this doesn't turn into one of those things where no one can figure it out. I knew that recall that matched all my symptoms was simply too easy of a fix.

Was this originally an active exhaust car? I know there is a harness that rides up near the pipes and if not relocated can lock out drive modes and throw some lights. Unsure if it would have anything to do with the reverse lockouts. Just throwing out ideas.

Yes it "was". So I do have that warning too. I know you either have to live with that warning, buy the plug that tricks it, tie up the old valves or (possibly) turn it off in Forscan. I wasn't aware of it causing these issues though. But who knows...with the electronics being so sensitive these days maybe someone can chime in that has unplugged the valves.

Just wanted to provide an update as I found out the issue. The car has the Tremec transmission swap done to it. So obviously the plug for the transmission sensor can not be plugged in which is causing the issues.

Check the trunk wire near the right hinge. That wire is known to fail due to constant flex opening and closing the trunk
