I think what I am going to do is bring it to my own body shop, see how much it will cost, and then see if they're willing to pay it, if not, I will see where to go from there, it really shouldn't cost much to repair.

Maybe I'm just jaded from being stuck in thousands of accidents on CA highways the last 15 years but the vast majority of them have no reason to call law enforcement or remain where they are on the road. It has gotten so bad the last five years that the highway signs provide instruction to remove the vehicle from traffic and to exchange information if they arent injury related. When you commute four hours a day, your patience for minor accidents is gone. The dollar amount makes absolutely no difference to your insurance company and you certainly arent going to be detained for not contact law enforcement unless somebody fled LOL. Here in VA, everyone drives so slow I dont know how anyone can get in accident on the highway (traffic is ridiculous on the 95).

Next time report it to the police immediately; especially if the other party is at fault. DO NOT listen to anyone who tells you not to report it.

If you get the other driver that is involved information and they want to leave than so be it. You should still wait for the cops, file the report, and let them issue any tickets if necessary. This one would definitely be failure to maintain an assured distance; which will help your claim if you intend to make it.

And I bet a DUI would have been handed out as well from the sound of it or the driver who gave no information might have a warrant out for them? If they are drunk I would want them off the road and in jail before they keep driving and possibly hurt/kill someone else.

It will not go on a carfax report just by reporting anything to the police. So at this point I would just see what the other driver is going to do and if nothing you will probably be out of pocket on this.

Next time always file a police report at the time of the accident.

Hence my comment, it is impossible to know the dollar amount of damage and to contact your insurance company. All states in the US are similar (dollar amounts may vary). Hell, the digital signs on the highway tell you to move the vehicle out of the road and exchange information unless there is an injury involved or the damage prevents you from doing so.
Those signs are during times of heavy traffic or inclement weather, not 100% of the time. Traffic officers are responsible for doing just this, handling traffic incidents (Vehicle Accidents, moving violations, inoperable traffic control devices, etc). It's what they get paid to do.

I think what I am going to do is bring it to my own body shop, see how much it will cost, and then see if they're willing to pay it, if not, I will see where to go from there, it really shouldn't cost much to repair.

Id just have your guy fix it, at this point there's nothing to make the other guy do anything, ya know?

I'm probably not going to report it, even if they refuse to pay. It will count as an accident, and I don't want that on the car fax if I can avoid it. It will bring down the price of the car in the future if I ever want to sell it.
yeah. Car fax is fvcking evil. My audi, I had someone back into me. Messed up his bumper, but did not scratch me at all. we exchanged insurance, and we both had state farm.

I never even took my car to the body shop.

2 years later, i go to trade the car in, and carfax says it was in a front end collision. WTF. would have taken 7 weeks to get it pulled from the cars record. by then i would miss out on my deal. i was sofa king pissed.

Anything non structural won't go to cardax unless the body shop reports it as a minor incident. No way that little damage goes on carfax.

huh? Why didn't you call the police?
Four guys at 3 am. I asked a few times for his insurance, did not get the best looks. So I decided not to push it.

that's not how it works... if they didn't want to give up insurance info, that's even more suspicious. Who the cares if they were giving you 'bad looks'. Feeling threatened is even more of a reason to call.

My mom always said something about being right all the way to the grave. This is when you take photos surreptitiously and call the police and insurance once you feel safe.

where do you live where you would actually fear for your life after an accident like that? Time to move!

In a big city. And I'm a big guy with a serious military background - but when you're alone and 3 grown men have reason to shut you up, you shouldn't try to be a hero. You go ahead, bud. Tough guy. CHIEF!
