Bought a CPO 2017 mustang in January of 2020. The warranty expired last month, but yesterday I heard some noises and found out the caliper was partially off. I believe in November I did one of those “multi point” inspections that Ford sends coupons for in the mail and one of the inspected areas include the breaks. Can I still somehow be covered by some warranty since they checked breaks and saw no issue then? The caliper has damaged the interior of my rim and torn some paint clean off. This car has given me nothing but problems since purchase. Cracked manifold after a few months of ownerships, worn out pinion bearings in the diff that had my car at the dealer for over a month due to back ordered parts, a few other smaller things, and now this. Any advice would be appreciated.

Those inspections consist of looking at the amount of brake pad thickness left and had the caliper been cracked at that time they would have said something.
Do you recall driving over something in the road ?

I don’t recall driving over anything that would be alarming. Then again I gave my brother my car for the day so who knows what he did. Wouldn’t the rim bend before a caliper would detach like that? I’ve never seen this happen out of no where on a newish car.

Check behind the caliper. The lower bolt either sheared off or was not installed after a brake service.

My thought was something hard lodged between the caliper and rim breaking the caliper

Could be, would have made a pretty big clank sound though. I'd still ask the brother.

Judging by how far down and away from the bracket the caliper is, both bolts are broken or missing entirely. IIRC, the caliper bolts had loctite on them when I did my rear brakes last fall. My bet is that someone was in there and didn’t tighten things up. You could also confirm this by checking the bracket bolts. If the bracket bolts have marks on the edges where a wrench or socket was used, someone was in there at some point

Update. Brought it to the only mechanic opened on Sunday. Both my rear calipers were fucked in some way. He said “it is disconnected at the slider”, I don’t know what that means but he said he’s never seen that before. And the passengers side caliper was only making contact on one side of the rotor. Cool guy he showed me it all. Said I got lucky cause he’s seen people drive 5 miles with a loose caliper and they had to replace the rim from damage while my rim damage was just cosmetic.
