Raxiom Unit in the Works?

So basically the factory 8 inch screen is the $1,000 MFT swap? I asked a dealership about upgrading and they made it sound like you can't upgrade with the genuine Ford units. When you say Premium Bezel what is that? $1,000 is quite steep. Sounds like this $300 unit that's out currently is basically the same thing no?

Dealers tell you a lot of things can't be done.. There is a thread about adding MFT.. And 1k isn't bad for OEM parts that are designed to work with the car.. I know people complain about sync but I've had it a long time.. And it was terrible.. But the latest updates have really made it a good system..

In my opinion.. A MFT upgrade is the best move and leaves you a step away from sync 3 and car play..

It's similar, but the MFT swap is definitely more polished than the Tomptop. If you can live with turning off temp or reading it in C and using the physical controls for a/c and heat instead of on the touch screen... you would probably be better off with the Tomptop. See below thread for the MFT swap and details. Also, the MFT is a lot more involved than the Tomptop to install.

There is very limited space behind the bezel. A solution beyond what you see today (TomTop, Raxiom, Rosen), and that gives you the capabilities seen in common aftermarket double-DIN systems, will be more complex. Time, money, engineering...

That's what I'm waiting on. I've pretty much given up on being able to fit my pioneer double din after seeing how little space is back there. An 8" screen connected to a brain where the cd player goes (I don't listen to cds anymore) with rca outputs and all the connections of an aftermarket radio that also deletes sync would be perfect for me. Since it would be one of a kind, the price would suck but I would gladly pay it if the unit worked as well as my pioneer.

The post I was replying to said they wanted wheel controls, navigation, larger screen. All accomplished for a very inexpensive price with the Tomtop.

If this Raxiom comes in at $700 and does all the same functions as the Tomptop without using Sync, I hardly doubt it will be that much better than sync to justify more than double the cost. Just my 2 cents. I was prepared to spend $1,200 on a replacement infotainment, but the Tomtop came out for $300 and for what it is, great deal.

If the Raxiom comes in at $500 price range, and is far superior and ditches sync, I might upgrade.

The Raxiom units for the S197 still use Sync. I doubt they would change that at least as far as voice control goes and phone connection goes. They do offer one with an HDMI connection now though.

For those wanting a unit that ditches sync may I ask why? I rarely use mine (forgot I even have the voice controls half the time) but what's the benefit to not having it? Does not having it give you something else from these other units?

All I use sync for is to bluetooth my phone calls, contacts, and play pandora/spotify. Sync for some reason is just awful at pandora playback and I have to continuously reconnect the app manually to get it to work even after multiple sync master resets (yes, I've tried all the reset options). That coupled with having to change pandora stations by voice which only works half the time gets annoying fast. Plus the added ability to have one master eq across all sources like my pioneer can do would be huge for me as the 3 band on the stock unit is trash. Right now I'm using my phone's built in eq as I get 20 bands with the jetAudio app but when I want to listen to the radio it's set flat and I have to change it then remember to change it back to flat when I go back to my phone.

It's a hassle.

Here's the thing, an aftermarket solution REALLY shouldn't be this hard, especially in the digital media works we're in. With 2 USB ports, and an AUX input, there's no reason that an internal component system shouldn't be easily created. Head units don't have to be SO deep, if the CD player is eliminated (which I'm sure a lot of people would be okay with losing.) It makes me wish I had the facilities, materials, and financial backing of a company to design a GOOD head unit, with 4-5 EQ bands, 250w of power, and a nice 8" display that can be customized with a user-defined wallpaper, all while maintaining CABUS functionality. SYNC CAN go away, but it's almost easier to just not use it- The SW buttons can be remapped (reinterpreted) by the replacement HU. Because the factory radio ties into the CANBUS system, allowing an Android OS to run over top of it would be even better.

Time to call the Chinese...

As soon as you turn on your OEM headunit, you're using Sync. It's the brain that controls every thing in there. (of course I could be wrong, maybe it's called something else. Whatever the brain is called, we're all referring to it as Sync since we don't know any better)

Many including me want to ditch Sync because it does a terrible job of connecting to any devices, or even CD playback. Bluetooth is hit or miss if it feels like connecting on a given day for music playback, having an iPod plugged into the USB will often result in the unit saying there's nothing connected to USB when you start the car, the CD player even managed to freeze in the middle of a song, I could go on...

I've never had an issue with SYNC, but I also don't use Apple products, and SYNC is a Microsoft product.
