Has anyone had any luck with either of these 3 touch up paint kits on your Rapid Red cars? I usually just go with the Ford pen, but wanted to see if anyone had any success with alternative brands.

I’ve tried the factory touch up and have found that it goes on like water. After thoroughly mixing it, it just seems very thin.

Ford works great but the includes brushes blow. Get some real brushes and it works much better.

I considered this option as well (I'm in NZ), I went another route and did a little checking around asking some car detailing places what it cost for doing some touch-ups, and how they do it, found out that they all knew this one guy who did it for all the high-end cars as well.
The cost wasn't as bad as I expected, so went that route rather than me trying something and FĂng it up ;o)

I think the best you can hope for from any touch up is that it'll be a ten footer, i.e. hard to see or can't see at 10 feet or more. I had numerous chips on bonnet and bumper, had them touched up then applied clear PPF over whole front end, bit overkill, but hey...

There are there are only 2 versions of paint that has a bespoke clear. It has some pigments in this clear to enhance the metallic base coat. One version is Rapid Red, the other is a "blue color" but I do not know it's actual name. One must follow the instructions for application of these special paints: base coat then the clear. If this procedure is new to anyone one of you then, by all means, hire someone, with experience, to get the job done.

Gotta ask.

I assume the thickness of the tinted clear has an effect on the appearance.

I believe it is impossible, even for factory robots to lay down the exact same thickness over all the creases, undulations, etc. of body panels. But since those areas also will be getting light at different angles, its not noticeable to the human eye.

But how the heck can a body shop or DIY human spraying the tinted clear get the exact thickness of "clear" to match for repairs even on flat panels? And regardless of how consistent they are, they won't be able to match factory robot's very thin thickness. So, does the tint in the clear have to be adjusted down by trial and error to match factory appearance?

They've been doing if for decades, every candy coat color works on the same principle. Factory thee stage paints are the equivalent. When it goes for bodywork, the tech will spray a few test panels with the base and different thicknesses of the tint coat to see which one matches the best they they will apply with that thickness for repair.

Getting 2020 Shelby cleaned up to sell. Most rare color combo for GT350R, 1 of 15 Rapid Red, 1 of 7 with black roof. Nothing wrong, just moving on, I switch cars frequently.

1,600 miles if anyone is interested...
