I installed new speakers a few days ago and may have done something wrong that I think I messed up the head unit (radio receiver).

Right front speaker has distorted sound and sounds really bad. I thought speaker may have gone bad but then I tried other 2 speakers which are completely fine and same thing happens.

My question, can I replace the receiver unit with any 2018-2019 model or does it have to be exact same model?

I searched on ebay and there's many models for 2018-2019 mustangs. Also noticed it says it must be programmed at dealer to work.

More likely something wrong with your amplifier. It's located in the drivers kick panel above the hood release.
Also try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. Sometimes all it takes with the electronics in these cars is to re-boot them.

Also the connection of the cables you made are clean and connected properly? I am sure they are, but...

Yes, I even ran new wires just to test it and got the same results. I will check the amp like stangtime mentioned above. Thanks

I'll check the amp. For some reason I thought this car (2019) didn't bring one.

I checked there, there's no amp. Completely empty other than a few wires and the obd2 port

Do you have the large or small screen? Nav or no?
You said you ran new wires, from where to where?
Have you tried switching left for right to see if the condition moves?
Is it just the one speaker or all on that side?
You've got more trouble shooting to do before you pay for a new head unit.

Have you checked polarity on wire connections to speakers

doesn't really matter which polarity the speakers are connected with, as long as they are all connected with the same polarity. For each channel, the easiest thing is of course to connect the red terminal on the amp or receiver or whatever to the red terminal on the corresponding speaker, and black to black.

I have the small screen. It happens only on front passenger side no matter what speaker I use there.

At one point it was fine but after almost finishing the install I might have shorted out that side of any electronic parts in the head unit. Not sure what really happened, just a wild guess.

That's correct, I have it connected directly from speaker to aftermarket 4 channel amp. The rest of speakers are fine. It's just the passenger front side.

I don't recall you saying you had an aftermarket amp in the car?
That's where I'd start, not the head unit. Take the amp out and see if it still does it.
