I feel it's going to depend on the amount of area you're looking to cover. If there are a handful of places you're interested in, you might do it yourself and have a great time at it. But if it is something like a full panel or a piece with a unique shape, might be best to leave with the pros.

"Like gift wrapping a football."

If you watch videos on-line of shops doing it, IMO, there's quite a bit of effort, not just in the application, but the prep, maintaining a clean environment, etc. Finally, just the experience of working with the materials itself.

I had mine done by a shop and I couldn't be more pleased. You can't even tell it's there unless your standing immediately next to the car and studying the body lines for a bit. And I've got a warranty for 10 years.
understood .. i have done window tinting of all my vehicles before ... and i was looking to cover the door / fenders and hood

Reads like you might be doing the front third of the car, maybe more? In my area, the shop I used, full front third ran about $3,000. For the $ you mentioned, they'd do the front 2/3rds of the car in PPF, top to bottom.

Edit: the sweet spot for many with a DD was full front third PPF, then ceramic coat the rest. About $5500. But yea, it's definitely worthwhile to shop around, and also to tour their shops and see the quality of their work.

never cared for PPF. Ceramic looks a lot better. With PPF you can tell its there, see the edges, eventually they all seem to yellow over time. dont wanna deal with that shit lol.

Your information is obsolete. New generations of PPF don't yellow, crack or deteriorite (10y warranty), it's wrapped around edges and unless I tell someone, no-one can tell it's there, no-one ever noticed even when we were walking around the car for dozens of minutes. It's still basically thin layer of rubber so I can see it's not identical to bare metal really up close but it's not an issue. It's great to touch as well. My PPF has ceramic layer and when I spray and buff detailer with SiO2 on it, it looks wetter than wet 😁 And hey, no chips anywhere after 7000 miles, still looking the same and spotless after almost 2 years. Costly, sure, 3 grand, but ceramics and its reapplication would cost some too over the years and wouldn't protect against chips.
