Second time it has happened now ... at a standstill, shift into first, let up on clutch, and shifter pops out of gear with a thud. Anyone have/experience this?

I have, twice. Both times I didn't get it in 1st all the way. Don't baby this transmission - shove it in gear hard, fast, and deep!

Legitimately curious, since I don't know all the very fine details of how a manual tranny works, but why would the fluid viscosity make this happen?

I was under the impression that the helical cut nature of the gears helped them stay engaged together in gear when a load is applied to the input shaft.

All gears (except reverse) are always meshed together in a manual transmission. The difference is which ones are collared together, thus completing the power transmission from the input shaft, through the "christmas tree" gearset, back through the collared gear, then to the output shaft.

Each of the selectable gears has a set of "dogs" (yes, I'm using very technical terms here!) that are synchronized to the collar through brass synchronizing rings. When you "shift" gears, you are moving the collar from engaging the dogs on one gear to another. The brass rings take the wear while slowing or speeding the RPM of the gear selected to match the RPM of the output shaft. Once the two are spinning roughly the same speed, the collar can engage the dogs of the new gear, and the shift is complete.

If you don't get the collar firmly engaged on the gear, it can pop loose when power is applied (or under deceleration). That's what's happening when it pops out of first gear. Thus, my statement...hard, fast, deep. :D

In Sport Mode ... ALL THE TIME!
2012 Boos 302 did this very early on. Would slip back partially out of first and rattle the shifter. After some milage and a number of high speed runs in the various gears this behavior smoothed out and went away.

Get my 2017 in a couple weeks...I expect the tremec to be better than the MT82 in nearly all regards. The tremec in my 2008 was smooth as butter!

It's happened to me twice and I actually had to pop it so second gear to get going. It was kind of embarrassing, first time was with cars behind me and me revving the shit out of 2nd to get going (Positive note, the voodoo was loud). The 2nd time, it actually went into reverse mode but I didn't give it gas since i was like "WTF, why is my backup camera on" and no, I did not pull up on the ring, I geared it to 2nd and took off that way, just like the first time it happened.
BTW, this was last week. Hasnt happened since but it's sometime a chore to get in gear to first.

Try to put it in gear soon after clutch is depressed moving gears allow smoother and better engagement.

it just takes extra effort to get it fully into first, you really cant limp wrist it. I've had it pop out twice now, but hasnt happened for awhile since I give it a little extra nudge into first

Hey guys,

If this keeps up, and you head to your dealers, let me know. Send over a private message with your names, phone numbers, VINs, current mileages, and servicing dealers; I'll check out options on my end.

Did happen to me a few times as well (let say 3 Times in the past 3 months).
My Honda S2000 used to do it as well and I just got used to properly engaging the first gear (which you can actually hear) before releasing the clutch.
I consider this normal but would be interested to know if there is a fix.

This happened to me a few days ago. A Camaro Z28 was behind me too, quite embarrassing to be honest with you.
