I've had it happen three times in 10,000 miles. A couple pretty early on, and once recently.

It will feel as though it goes into first, but it doesn't quite go all the way. The dogs grind and the car pops out of gear.

I know typically double clutch immediately before engaging first, just to get the shafts rotating to help it engage. I suspect the issue may be related to synchro alignment, such that they are not really engaging early enough and therefore making it more difficult to engage first gear.

My transmission seems to work better when shifted quickly and with authority. Also at higher RPM.

Has happened to me a handful of times. A few times when I for sure put it in 1st with enough force that it should have been in - but still popped out and made a grind. Nice.

Second time it has happened now ... at a standstill, shift into first, let up on clutch, and shifter pops out of gear with a thud. Anyone have/experience this?
This happens to mine as well. What I found is the transmission is not fully in gear. Pay close attention and make sure it is all the way in before setting off. It is unlike any standard transmission I have owned in that regard.

I have, twice. Both times I didn't get it in 1st all the way. Don't baby this transmission - shove it in gear hard, fast, and deep!
Yeah, first time I thought it might be me not fully engaging in gear, second time surprised my. Am going to have to be really mindful with this and ensure 1st gear is fully engaged. And, as others have said, it is embarrassing. Guy at a gas station came over to talk to me about the car and when I started to pull away, it hoped out.

Thanks all for your responses.

Happened to me a few times as well. Seems if you heel/toe the car through the gears coming up to the light it has no issues, if you stop and then put it in first it doesn't always seem to want to go in, then you get the pop and grind when letting the clutch out.

Car has 1460 miles on it

Just happened to me this morning as I was starting up and head out of the garage. Put it in first gear and heard a pop sound. And realized it wasn't properly in 1st.

Wow and I thought it was just me

I have about 400 miles on the odo. I also have had the shifter pop out of first 3 times in the span it took to hit 400 miles. I thought maybe it was not in gear, but the second and third time I was like what the heck? Maybe more people will chime in. Seems like maybe an issue that Ford should address. I am very careful with engagement, and don't abuse the clutch, shifter or tranny. However as careful as I am being - I am still kind of waiting for it to happen again. I really don't want a blow off at the dealer.
