I got $11k for a 7 year old RAV4 that cost me $30k and had 65k miles. 7 year old Mustang with same kinda equivalent would get you 9-10k on a trade in according to KBB. I think its just the depreciation of a new car. Don't matter what car it is for the most part IMO.

Most new vehicles tank in value the first 2-3 years, take it or leave it.

Jeep Wranglers are kind of an anomaly. My '13 is worth almost as much as my Mustang, with nearly 10X the mileage. The values on them make no sense, since IMO they aren't worth what they get for them, but I'll take the great resale aspect. :headbang:

2015/2016 owners looking to trade up on an 18 will get a wet slap in the face on trade in values. The only way to maximize the money back is to sell your car to an enthusiast outright! Thats what i did on previous 2012.

Resale value is all market dependent. Right now trucks and CUV's are the hottest cars dealers want on their lots thanks to lower gas prices..

As an example.... I bought a 2013 F-150 when the market was slow for truck sales. Ford had so many incentives and rebates on the V8 trucks that I got my 2013 for $26,000 out the door back in '13 with a sticker of $36,000. I then traded it in last February when truck sales were booming and I got $21,000 ( & only owed $15,000 ) as a trade in towards my '16 GT. I drove it for 3 yrs and just under 36K miles and walked away with a $6000 down payment for my GT...That to me is amazing resale value..... BTW, I put NO money when I bought the truck either..

I made out like a bandit...

Hey, we don't have it that bad ok. Think of the poor chump who spend $100k on an S-class or a 7 series and selling it for $25k in 5 years.

That's part of the reason resale is so low and the reason I wouldn't buy a new one when a couple year old one is so much cheaper. It's better if you can meet the previous owner too.

Trucks hold their value really well, except Dodge/Ram, but who wants a Dodge out of warranty???

I've come to learn that the only decent resale value is a Tacoma or 4Runner. And even then it's not bullet proof
This, just sold my 14 4runner limited for more than what I was asking for it, resale of the 4runners and tacomas is awesome, we gained 3k in equity in 2 years. Scared to know what hit I would take on my gt.

I'd rather have a Dodge out of warranty than a GM. Also I see you drive a G8 GT. Great choice! The only GM I truly loved. I miss mine sometimes.

As others have said, I think 3 things basically hurt resale. First, the Mustang sells in remarkable numbers for a fairly specialized vehicle. Two, there can be some pretty significant discounts off msrp - 4,5,6k off on some loaded models. Last, in a world lusting after SUV's, a used 2 door sport coupe has a very finite number of possible buyers.

I'd definitely buy used if I was looking for a project car or wanting to do alot of mods. For something more special I'd wait if I had to and buy new anyway.

I bought my 2015 GT Premium used last Sept with only 3200 miles. Still looked and smelled new. Saved me nearly $10k off of original sticker. Somebody lost their ass on that trade. You do have to be careful buying a used sports car. I'm very pleased with mine.

Resale for the Stang to me doesn't seem any worse than most of your Mainstream cars.
When I was shopping for mine, used 15, and 16's were priced close to new ones.

For example an used 16 GT identical to my 17 GT was only $2,000 less, The car did only have 3,000 miles, but there were plenty of GT's with with 15,000 to 20,000 miles still priced around 26k to 27k. I thought the $29,750 was a very fair deal for my New Base GT. Of course now I'm seeing them for 1k less than I paid.

Fair enough! Only vehicles I've ever had issues with are a Dodge and a Jeep. The Fords and GMs have all been rock solid, well except 1 of the f150s. Consumer Reports and JD power will still tell you anything made by FCA is absolutely terrible and I do feel this is a big reason why they have some of the worst resales in the business.

I like the G8, but am tired of it being a 4 door. Had they made a coupe, I wouldn't be looking for a replacement. Camaro is a amazing car, but short of new sheet metal, I'm not interested in replacing the G8 with one. The 2018 GT is checking all the boxes, but I still haven't seen it in person.

In fact most dealerships prefer they be stock..stock cars are easier to sell.

A friend of mine worked at a local Ford dealership back in 2013. They had two basically identical 2012 GT's sitting on their used section. One car had about 12,000 miles on it, Kona Blue, premium, black interior, automatic. Had a sticker on it of $27,500. was bone stock.
The other was a Ingot Silver premium, saddle interior, automatic with 10,000 miles but had a Borla exhaust, TSW Nurburgrings's and the Ford coupe handling pack. Sticker price of $26,000 even.

The Kona car sold in 6 days. The Silver car sat for 3 months because people didn't want to deal with someone elses custom jobs.
Exactly. Stock = sell for them because they don't want to do with someone else's fuck up.

Ford has been running F150/Mustang GT blurb in their ads as lowest 5 yr cost to own by KBB in their segments.

All new cars take the biggest hit in first 3 years like others have said, buying a new car with the intent on trading it in within 3-4 years is an expensive proposition, usually cheaper to lease in that window.
