If you already own a smart phone it is. Smart phone apps are free like Apple or Google Maps, Waze. These apps are also better than the nav software. They are easily upgradeable and travel with you from car to car, bike, or pedestrian mode.

Also at lights or stopped in traffic there are many things you can do on your smart phone that you can't do from your Mytouch screen ... texting, surfing, playing plants versus zombies...

Anyway, the purpose of the thread is not to solicit opinions on whether in 2014 a smartphone can add to your in-car experience, it's to find out what people are doing to integrate it into their driving setup in a safe way...

Don't get me wrong I'm all for window mounts for your phone, my issue if those that try to pick it up while driving (especially a manual) at high speeds. I use my phone for Navi so I see the advantage of the window mount.

Back when I first got the first generation of iPod Classic that could play videos, I used to watch whilst driving, holding the screen in one hand and the steering wheel with the other. I've gotten past that because I realize how dangerous it is, but I still find myself playing Hearts on my phone at red lights.

It's ok to use a car touch screen for GPS, climate control and audio as long as it's mounted on the dash but not one on a phone.

dx.com typically has a lot of options for different model phones. Dirt cheap and free shipping on everything. It takes a couple weeks because it ships from china but read the reviews to avoid cheap crap. I got my previous one from there that mounted to the vent. Haven't tried it on the mustang yet. I try to get phone specific ones because the universal ones are too big. or the side clamps may push a button.

Right now I just keep it plugged in to the USB and leave the phone in the open area at the bottom of the dash.

I have a very short USB cable from Belkin that I use in the USB slot in front of the shifter. I just lay my phone in the space next to it.

Here up NORTH you are sitting with a blank screen with a Google message, saying something like: "Sorry NO service." And the APP is closing. BTW: Network charges still apply when you use Google maps and Co. so it is not free!

You could try Here Drive+ by Nokia. It's excellent GPS software, free and downloadable maps for offline use.

I'm using the Universal Smartphone Car Seat Rail or Floor Mount from http://www.arkon.com/mobile-grip/ in my Camry and it works great. My Mustang is still on order, so I haven't been able to try it on a mustang but as long as you have an exposed seat bolt you can mount it to, you're good to go! They also have a cigarette lighter mounted one which would probably work great too.
