So, what does this have to do with leaving you car running at a gas station?

I stated that a match tossed into an open container of gasoline won't burn, which is true. It was a side post, not germane to the topic at hand.

Please, someone tell me what they think will happen if you leave your car running while filling it at the pump? In my 50 years of being on this earth, I've never seen a fire at a gas pump. And the videos I've seen of fires at gas stations, are from someone doing something INCREDIBLY stupid, and have nothing to do with any running vehicle.

Hell, I'd imagine there's more danger with static electricity and random fuel vapors than with leaving your car running.

You are not proving anything. Everyone who graduated from high school has done the gasoline and match trick. But pointless, because there is no open gasoline at Stations, it is ALL VAPORS. (Can't you smell gas at a gas station...?)

Secondly, it is not state by state. Gasoline stations and their standards are all federally regulated. Trust me, if you didn't shut your car off, I would be calling the Police... because it is not up to you, it is a logical courtesy given to those around you.

Off-subject, WRT oily roads: There was an investigation and findings that several of the waste-disposal companies were filling their tankers with all kinds of noxious fluids, purportedly to truck them to disposal sites where they would be dealt with safely; however, it turned out these malcreants were hitting the highway and openng the drain valves, depositing the junk on the road avoiding the considerable expense of doing it the right way. I always think of that when it rains and the inevitable mist rises along much-used routes. Another reason I don't drive my car in the rain.

Ok, I kid you not, no bullshit, I just watched an episode of Walker Texas Ranger (I was senior sitting) where the bad guys were doing this and it was killing horses. Dead serious, just saw that episode about 2 months ago

OK, so Im old school so turning my car off is second nature. I will always do it.
That said here is a realistic opposing view. https://www.quora.com/What-can-happen-if-you-pump-gas-while-your-car-is-still-running

Go get gas in Oregon and see how that goes ... you can't even do it yourself.

But but...NASCAR! Haha I always turn my car off more out of habit than anything else. But statistically it is safer than leaving the car on that is just a fact.

I turn off my vehicles when refuelling - Costco insist.

I've not been able to find any of these statistics and facts you mention - care to post them here?

Has there been fires while a car is off? Wouldn't that be more rare than when a car is on.

You mentioned statistical facts, ........ don't those statistics you mentioned provide the answer to your question?

Maybe those statistical facts that you mentioned would provide the answer.

Were you unable to find those statistical facts?

Rare but real ... be safe rather than sorry.
At 1:24 the reporter states "if heat from the engine comes in contact with the fuel" - the engine is going to be hot from the start of the fuelling to the end.

As I mentioned before, I do shut my engine off, and simply asked if there was a reliable source with confirmation and explanation that keeping the engine running presents a higher risk vs the risk of the spark from the starter motor brushes when restarting with all those fumes still present, and a media report is not what I consider a reliable source.

...

OK, the mention of static electricity causing a spark and possible fire is real; that's why aircraft fueling stations and trucks have a separate ground line that needs to be securely attached to a metal part on the aircraft. Begs the question, do our 'Stang's 'capless' gas filler ports have any metal to ground to the pump nozzle? They look to be all plastic to me.

Check this report by PEI.

Most common in the reported incidents is getting back into the vehicle while the gas is flowing and a static spark starting a fire when they return and touch the nozzle, ........ without the engine running.

10-02
1992 Dodge Caravan
Customer started the fueling process and then got
back inside the vehicle and sat down in the seat.
Driver then got out of the vehicle and reached for the
nozzle. Vapors around her ignited, catching the
vehicle on fire.
