I bought a used S550 and the previous owner put a chrome BBK intake. Although i like the actual intake i dont like the chrome affect in the engine bay. Is it safe to paint the intake to a different color? Preferably black. If so, what type of paint would i use?

VHT Engine Enamel spray paint from Autozone or most auto parts stores.

Clean it, apply the primer, let dry, apply the coats of color, let it dry, apply the clear gloss over the top to finish it off.

I painted my plastic engine covers with no issue.

Any high temp engine spray should do. Maybe try a wrinkle black finish? Or do it right and get it powdercoated. Shouldn't be that much, maybe $50-100?

Plasti dip will be fine. If you want to paint it. You will need to rough that chrome up with 180grit. Then use an etching primer before any regular primercan go on. You can go straight to sandable primer but the paint can flake off the chrome easy if you nick it during install.
My recommendation is to plasti dip, no prep other than make sure it is clean. Add a glossifier if you want more shine or powdercoat it.
If you go the paint option, you will have half of what it cost to powder coat it. If you go plastidip you will have $15 into it.

^ what Southview says. Most important factor is good prep. Don't shortcut it.
