Hello all, I just wanted to share the outcome of painting my engine and coil covers. The process itself is not bad at all, I was surprised how well the spray paint adhered to the plastic. Most important of all the paint job passes the one foot test, hell, it passes the less than one foot test. :headbang: Hope to see more color combinations on here!

You did a great job, can you explain the process you used?

First I cleaned the surfaces with water and then 70% isopropyl alcohol. I then proceeded to use VHT primer and 3 coats. Afterwards, I taped down the middle section of the engine cover and painted it with VHT Ford red and used 4 coats for assurance; the same thing goes for the coil covers, I painted them both completely red. The middle section of the engine cover came next. I taped down the already painted red portions on the engine cover and exposed the middle. I painted that black with 3 coats of the VHT black spray paint. After the black dried out I went in for the details. I taped the "Powered By Ford" and stripes and used a box cutter to remove the tape from the lettering. I painted that black until all the red was completely gone. On the engine cover I used the same process with the stripes. I have not used a clear coat on these yet, and am debating if I should. They look great already and won't see much action other than heat in the bay.

you should definitely clear coat, wet sand, and polish with a da polisher if you have one. then after it's been a while and cured. wax them. it'll look like those $150-$250+ coils and engine covers.

I can promise you with the material that was used it will never look like the 150 to 250 coil covers

I wouldnt be surprised Im a perfectionist. Some people just have different standards. If you like them thats awesome. Personally if I were interested in buying a car and someone popped there hood and I saw that I would walk away as In my mind I would be thinking okay this is a 40k car new and it has rattle can paint on it what is there that I cant see thats been cheaped out on. Dont take offense to this as I only chimed in because the other person said that with clear and a sand and polish it would like like the expensive ones. I own a company and I paint cars car parts and do hydrographics. The material thats been used can never look like the ones I or any high end company does. Do people really think we go to autozone and by vht and use spray paint. Ive also seen the video where you said we earn our money by sanding and buffing. 99 percent of the time I dont buff anything sanding and polishing is to remove a nib in the clear. I earn my money and on a set of coil covers I might make $40 profit, by using high end material thats real basecoat some can cost over $1000 a gallon. Clear coat thats $300 a gallon. Using an airbrush and proper technique on the lettering for crisp clean lines and a real automotive paint booth. If I charge someone $140 to paint there coil covers im not making $140 Most of the cost is material. When done properly you remove the actual texture in the plastic and it will be slicker then the paint on the exterior of the car.
