Not sure how many of you guys are on the Facebook groups, but I recently ordered and received my ported intake manifolds from Paul Schnars (P3 is his official name: Paul's Porting & Polishing). Going price is about $300 plus core exchange ($130 fee, refunded when he receives your stock intakes back - for mine he refunded it the same day package was delivered).

Attached are three quick shots showing the throttle body opening, upper and lower openings. Let me know if you guys want any more pictures before I get started with the install, hopefully this week.

There is some mixed information about whether a retune/tune update is required, with the S550 the ECU will gradually compensate for the added airflow, but if the amount of additional air is enough on the review of datalogs, MPT will retune. Other tuners (like Auto Mafia Racing, who also offers ported intakes, have their own guidelines for tune revisions. Kalob seems to review and provide updates for just about everything FYI).

I went with Paul's ported intakes because the quality of the port job looked better and he's a good guy that helped me with information before. There are other porters out there, the quality just isn't the same (sample shot one and two) and I wouldn't recommend them when for the same or a bit more money you can get a much better job.

If you want to get a set like mine, you can email him at [email protected] or find him on FB and message him. If you prefer a proper website, Rocket Performance now carries them and here is the direct link (my link takes you direct to S550 intake with core charge).

Does this pep up the acceleration?

It should! Will hopefully be good for around 10-15rwhp. I haven't been able to get on a dyno yet so won't be able to say for certain on any numbers for that.

Nope, I was a little surprised by that too actually. Gotta reuse the stock ones or buy new ones, probably around $20-$30 if I had to guess. Since I'm right under 25k miles on mine, not concerned with the quality of my stock ones by any means.

Also, I bought some of the Motorcraft Orange coolant to prepare for any lost...definitely check with your local dealerships parts department before you buy online. For once, mine came in cheaper. Amazon showed $28 for a gallon, dealer was $13.99 and was in and out in 5 minutes.

Yes, both were included for that price. Mine were $250 because of his Black Friday sale, shipping isn't included either.

First comments/notes as I'm doing this:
  • hope you're taller than me or longer arms at least, my back hurts from all this reaching around
  • 2017s have 4 T40 Torx bolts holding down the fuel rails - this is dumb as fuck and ruins doing this with simple tools everyone has. Currently waiting for my neighbor to come back with one from the store but he's also doing laundry and I'm basically at his mercy
  • The rear hose you have to disconnect from the lower manifold is in an awful position tucked close to the firewall and also kinda behind the battery compartment/under the cowl panel
  • The injector harnesses have red portions that slide up like the throttlebody plug then there's a black piece underneath that you push in to unclip them
  • I've used 7 and 8 mm sockets, need longer than what I have for some of the bolts
  • go very gently on the MAF sensor screw. I snapped the head on mine tightening it too much, hopefully I can find a replacement and get the broken body of the screw out relatively easily
  • bring a friend, would probably make it a lot easier

Finally summary:
  • my neighbor took forever for nothing, but he tried. Ended up walking to Walmart (Uber got within viewing distance of me on the way to the pool site because I was cheap then cancelled and it was 11 minutes to the next one to show up) and buying a set. That set me back about 3.5 hours
  • for the love of god please make sure to move over the gasket that goes on the lower manifold into the thermostat housing. It looked like it was on my new lower, it wasn't and I only found out once I buttoned everything back up and refilled my coolant tank. And then it started leaking coolant out the front all over the engine block
  • coolant smokes up like a mofo (see above leaking coolant)
  • made weird noises once I started the heater, noises stopped after about 40-60 seconds and the engine warmed up a bit

Haven't driven yet, I'll update again after that. Also plan on datalogging so I can send that to MPT for a revision.

All in all, would definitely pay someone $150 to do it next time. $200? Stretching it. $300? Fuck you, I'll suffer again.

side note: if you're planning on doing a 170* thermostat, nows a good time because you're already leaking coolant everywhere. I did mine today too so that could possibly skew some of my impressions, doubtful but worth mentioning.

Do you guys recommend installing yourself or having a shop do the install? I was also thinking of getting an aluminum driveshaft (which definitely will be a shop install) so I might have them installed together.

They're great, wasn't able to do what I wanted because of all the traffic that ended up being on the road, even on what are normally empty streets. Not sure what was really going on. I did a couple of datalogs for MPT and forgot to send them right away so they went off last night. Doubtful I'll hear anything back until next week now unfortunately.

@Fuse honestly, after you do it once it isn't so bad, but if you have all the tools it would probably go quite a bit smoother than mine did. The T40 really threw my install off about 3-4 hours. I would set aside at least 5 hours just to make sure you don't run into any issues and buy at least one gallon of coolant. I bought two and I'm glad I did because of the leak I had from forgetting the one gasket. There were several things I was worried about breaking, but, as usual, car parts are pretty tough.

Another difficult part (imo, probably not for more experienced people), is pulling off the damn hoses. Definitely need pliers for that (if you drain the radiator this doesn't really apply, but I didn't want to mess with my underbody shield again) and to be able to get a good grip. The mandatory hose to pull for vacuum I believe, it is a double clip at the front (passenger side of TB) that took a bit of finessing to get off without an extra set of hands.

I really respect people that work on cars for a living, everything is crowded together and hard to reach and most mechanics are not tall slim people...

So Paul doesnt include the gaskets? Thats interesting. We use new OEM cores with our ported intakes and they have the new gaskets. Im surprised he doesnt.
No gaskets. I got mixed answers on this on the parts from Ford and whether they included the gaskets, so I assumed they don't come with them. I wasn't really worried about reusing mine since the car is only around 25k miles as is.

You probably have more experience doing stuff than I do, plus the 15s have a regular 8mm instead of the damn T40 on the fuel rail! That lines up with what a shop would probably charge, 2 hours or so labor.
