2016 Mustang GT w/ 2.9L Whipple, ARH headers & 3'' exhaust. Getting a p2098 code which I believe is the o2 sensor downstream from the cats on the driver side. The 02 sensor attached to the header looks different from the one downstream after the cats. Are they supposed to look different? Thank you in advance.

That o2 sensor has a non fouler attached. It's commonly used to move the sensor out of the exhaust stream. People use them after removing the cats to prevent inefficiency codes (P0420 P0430).

Appears to possibly have an adapter or spacer on it, which may be causing the issue.

Possibly could be dirty and need a cleaning. Also could be a bad sensor, but I would personally clean them first with some brake cleaner or carb cleaner.

Makes sense but I’m getting a code anyway. Should I replace with oem o2 sensors?

The non fouler only prevents the P0420/P0430 code. I was just trying to let you know why it was there.

Do you have a scanner to check fuel trims and make sure the car isn't running lean?
it was running lean due to a air leak from a fractured bypass actuator rubber elbow which I replaced but it should be all good now. It must’ve damaged the o2 sensor.

If you repaired the leak it may take several drive cycles for the light to go off. I don't believe that code is normally associated with a failed sensor.

the air leak was over cylinder 5 ( that is where that bypass 90 degree elbow is situated as you might know ) and I was getting a misfire code for cylinder 5 and a p0174 code.

I changed all spark plugs and cleared codes. Misfire code disappeared and the p0174 came back. The air leak was found shortly after which I addressed and the p0174 has not come back.

The only code I’m getting now is a p2098 code ( lean bank 2 downstream sensor ). I’m going to change that 02 sensor out tomorrow and clear the codes & see what happens.

With the price of o2’s I would just change it. If the leak is fixed then the code should not come back

Showing lean. Look for a exhaust leak. Find it, fix it.
