Oil recommendation.

Hi all. Just want to get some recommendations on engine oil as I'm going to be be doing my own oil change 6 monthly now rather than at the garage. The cars a 2016 GT lightly modified with larger steeda CAI, custom remap and catback x pipe exhaust.

Manual states use an engine oil that meets the specification defined by WSS-M2C948-B, if not then it is acceptable to use a SAE 5W-20 engine oil that is defined by ACEA A5/B5.

So if I search WSS-M2C948-B it brings up Castrol magnatec for ecoboost engines! And, for example, if I search Opie Oils with my vehicle reg it doesn't even show the above oil.

So a bit confused! Any recommendations/help would be appreciated. Thanks

is the difference in oil spec between pre and post facelift not to do the direct injection used on the gen3 motor? I'm sure the motor wont care as oil passageways and galleries are the same for Gen 2 and Gen 3?

The questions you need to ask yourself.

Mileage?
Driving style?
Performance adders?
Type of Boost (turbo or Supercharger)
Maintenance regime during storage.

Without this information, no one can give you sound advice.


My reccomendation will be Shell Helix Ultra 5w30 AF for all Naturally aspirated applications regardless of power.

Millers oil EE Performance 5w50 for boosted as a weekend car with spirited driving. Shell Helix Ultra 5w30 AF is also okay here if a daily.

In terms of how often? 6 months is extremely overkill. If you drive your car hard on the streets. 6000 miles.

If its just normal driving with the occasional day in the week where you enjoy yourself. 10k

I base this information off of having my oil tested via labs etc

Doing oil changes every 6 months is a fools gambit. Modern oils RE extremely good.

To give you some idea, on my car which is boosted, I have settled for an oil change every 7500 miles or 3 years. Whichever comes first. (I'm driving it less than a 1000 miles a year now). I'm even contemplating having it tested at 4 years and then 5 years because mileage on the oil is the real issue vs age. (yes moisture can build up in the oil over time but its not an issue if you bring your car up to temp in storage)

If changing oil every 6 months regardless of mileage with only street driving, 5w20, 5w30 etc doesn't matter too much.

Thanks for that. That's interesting. So I do 5-6k per year, mostly commuting, 18 mile round trip daily. Normal driving, Certainly not daily spirited driving.
However, after 6 months oil life indicator is less than 5%, my last service was March, 2k miles since and now oil life <5%.
Minor mods, CAI, remap, cat back exhaust but 6 oil life indicator was the same before the CAI and remap.

With your mileage and usage, I believe the oil life indicator will count down on a clock based on 12 months.

I guess it might not have been reset at the last change ?

Hi. No it definitely was, I made sure when picked it up after service, it's been reset each time after oil change.

I suspect it's the type of commute start stop particularly in mornings that is deteriorating the life of oil so quickly and have been advised to use an engine flush at next service and potentially even using 0w20 oil!

And no that advice is not from a spammy website but a reputable oil supplier who knows about mustangs.
