Oil change nightmare

I know you guys are going to think I'm pussing out, but my mechanic is willing to do the labor for an oil change for $30. I'd supply the consumables. I'm particular about my oil and filter and it far surpasses anything he uses. In retrospect, by the time I drag out the ramps/tools, take an oil bath, pour the oil in containers, clean up, drop the containers off... You know what I'm getting at. And if I go at the end of the day, he'll throw back a few cans of beer with me. Sounds like a win, win!

Sure, if you know the mechanic, trust him, and you can be there with him while he does all the work, then this is clearly the best option. That's what I do, too. A guy I know from the Romanian Ford forums has a small garage and a couple of good mechanics that work for him. He knows Fords inside out. I trust him and his guys to do the job properly. I can assist and learn new things (and also make sure they don't mess anything up, though that would probably not happen anyway), while having a coffee and chatting about cars. Win-win, indeed.

But not everybody is that fortunate. Many Mustang owners don't happen to have a trustworthy mechanic in their neighborhood, in which case they have no other option but to do it themselves if they want to avoid cock-ups.

I just pull the plug about 1/4-1/2 way out, let it slowly drain so it doesn’t splash all over the place. Takes a few mins but it’s faster than cleaning up the concrete.

I tape a big backsplash to the oil drain pan.

I have done that. simple, and works.
