Had my first sighitng today, a Tesla EV semi pulling trailer. It was decked out in Frito-Lay livery. If it was hauling potato chips I'm hard pressed to say the semi was working hard, but cool to see nonethelesss.

Have yet to see one in person, but interesting to know they’re on the highways now.

I had read a news article somewhere that Truck Drivers who have driven the Tesla cab state that the driving position is horrible, it’s not safe from a visibility perspective, and is not in the best interest of any long haul trucker.

Very interesting. I wonder whether Pepsi will have to build their own power plant as well to supply electricity to the chargers, thusly avoiding issues due to brown outs? Will they have to obey the same restrictions on recharging EVs that "regular" California residents do?

There are no restrictions I'm aware of. However flex alerts during very hot weather typically ask for voluntary reduction in electrical use from 4-9 PM. That request is for everyone, not just EV owners. There may be some cost incentive programs for customers that comply.

4-9 pm would be a good time to recharge semis. During rush hour when you prefer to stay off the roads.

True, I didn't think about that. The morning rush hour would be another good time to charge up too.

But it doesn't fit my narrative... :giggle:

Tesla, Expects the person in the cab to be a paper pusher, not a driver in the future.
Only thing the person in the cab will be doing is b.o.l. paper work and programming the nav for the stops.
I highly doubt an ev rig is for long haul use anyways. They could be if they moved to a cordless tool type system of removable battery packs. Stop at a truck stop, roll up to the swap station, they swap your packs for changed ones, you pay the bill, and drive off .

Yes.

To me, that's the only way ANY EV competes with ICE.

Eventually big rigs will be automated which will dramatically change trucking - welcome to the future where these things will move practically 24/7

I was reading an article about the automated trucking that was planned for FoxConn in Wisconsin awhile ago. It said most of the battery pack would be carried in the front part of the trailer, so the EV truck just connected to a recharged battery pack in the trailer when it picked up a new load.

I think that whole thing died because Foxconn was mostly BS. It's an interesting idea though.
