I pulled a fuel tank from another car and had to drain it. So drained the fuel into fuel cans and then put one can (3 gallons) in the S550 every few days.
The Check engine light came on because the car thought the fuel tanks level sensor had a fault .
So I take it, the "system" doesn't like it when you add 3 gallons drive enough to add 3 more.
Next fill up running it down to 1/4 tank then filling , cleared it. But an odd quirk.
The Ford app Listed the fault in the messages .

That is bizarre. Guess the Ford programmers never anticipated anyone filling up 3 gallons at a time repeatedly. 😆

Well, I'm sure most would never, but I did and when I read the listing of the fault on the app I was like WTF.
I wasn't going to not use the 100 octane fuel.

IIRC 4 gallons is what triggers a relearn on flex fuel tunes. This might be the reason why.
