27 November 2018

Model:

Ford
2018 F-150
Issue: Some 2018 F-150 vehicles equipped with a 5.0L engine may exhibit an engine rattle noise during a deceleration tip-out throttle maneuver from 1500 RPM to 800 RPM and/or during an acceleration tip-in throttle maneuver around 2000 RPM.

Action: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

Warranty Status: Eligible Under Provisions Of New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage Warranty/ESP coverage limits/policies/prior approvals are not altered by a TSB. Warranty/ESP coverage limits are determined by the identified causal part and verified using the OASIS part coverage tool.

(1). Yes - proceed to Step 2.

(2). No - this article does not apply. Refer to the Powertrain Controls/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) Manual for normal diagnostics.

2. Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) using the latest software version of the appropriate Ford diagnostic scan tool.

(1). NOTE: ADVISE THE CUSTOMER THAT THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ADAPTIVE TRANSMISSION SHIFT STRATEGY WHICH ALLOWS THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER TO LEARN THE TRANSMISSION'S UNIQUE PARAMETERS AND IMPROVE SHIFT QUALITY. WHEN THE ADAPTIVE STRATEGY IS RESET, THE COMPUTER WILL BEGIN A RE-LEARNING PROCESS. THIS RE-LEARNING PROCESS MAY RESULT IN FIRMER THAN NORMAL UPSHIFTS AND DOWNSHIFTS FOR SEVERAL DAYS.

Sounds like they think the rattle is detonation? Trying to tune it out?

Very odd. Not sure how a PCM update would affect an engine "rattle" unless they think it is detonation. How could detonation occur on deceleration when there is no load on the the engine?

if this was the fix every car with a tune would be fixed.
This.

I have datalogged many times while forcing the rattle. The knock sensors never see it.

There was a TSB in 2011 that is similar to this one: TSB 11-7-4

Some 2011 Mustang vehicles equipped with a 5.0L and built on or after 8/17/2010 may exhibit a piston rattle noise in cold ambient temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) and below. The noise normally occurs in the 2000-3500 RPM range and will decrease as engine temperature warms up. An update of the powertrain control module (PCM) calibration to reduce intensity and duration of the noise is now available.

What's funny, is my car starting making this noise right after they replaced my clutch. Went away when warm. I honestly haven't noticed it recently though. I'll have to do some revving when cold again, to see if it's still there.
