Picked up my new 2021 GT500 on Saturday. Car had 7 miles on it from the dealer. So far, I've accumulated a whopping 50 miles on it. I wont be able to complete the full break-in period until spring / summer 2022 (cars get stored for the winter in the next month or so). My understanding is manufacturer suggested break-in period is 1,000 miles (I will read the manual and owners supplement). Sales rep mentioned that GT500s are "computer regulated" for first 500 miles and prohibit full power until this is achieved. Is this factual?

Any suggestions for break-in? My thoughts included mild driving, some high-way driving speeds, some mild pulls to say 5k rpms (but not a WOT), series of harder stops to break-in the breaks, etc.

Thanks for the info.

Idk about that "computer regulated" thing. That was on the new Corvette however. Sounds like you know how to do a sensible break in already. Enjoy you car. đź‘Ť

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Break-in period per ford for the GT500 is 200 miles not 1,000, But I followed the 1,000 mile personally with all my cars and then did an oil change after, and the salesperson is incorrect that the computer will not allow you to do full power until 500 miles. I think he needs to go back to Sales re-training and brush up on the GT500.

Your vehicle requires a break-in period. Drive your new vehicle at least 100 mi (160 km) before performing extended wide open throttle maneuvers and at least 1,000 mi (1,600 km) before operating your vehicle at high speeds or track conditions. Note: Vary your speed frequently in order to give the moving parts a chance to break in.

yup that's what I also read in the GT500 owners supplemental around 4am this morning. Probably should have read that first before starting the thread.

I also plan to do first oil change at 1,000 miles.

Give the engine a couple of full heat cycles, varying RPM and load, then warm it up fully the next time and let it eat. Don't drive it like an old lady.

I got mine on Thursday and just varied my speeds and driving until i hit 100 miles. Then gave it full throttle and long cool down. Burnishing the brakes is next before i hit the track.

I’ve never seen a modern car do one thing or another based on break in.

I broke in under 4,000rpm, to 500 miles then changed oil.

I like to disassemble things.
Paid for the car at the dealership, got in the car, pushed the start button and proceeded to drive straight through Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and finished up in New York. Varied speeds when I could whether traveling through small towns, brief stops, and hauling ass on the highway for some 16hrs. Once home I washed the car and changed the oil/filter not long after. Worked for me and I wouldn't have it any other way.
