Mt82 oil choices

I have some bottles of redline mtl I would consider using in my mt82
Temps here are upper 90s right now

The car currently has only 400 miles on her and I have had an itchy shift feeling from day one
I think the feeling is synchro related and it seems to go away some what when my trans temp is up

I searched and found ppl are using royal purple or bg? Oils. I even saw it recommended to use a quart of mtl with the synchromesh.


Any opinions that can be shared with me or experience would be appreciated

i know im switching to rp syc next weekend.. but what ive seen on this forum most go with bg or rp.. and im a die hard amsoil, mutol guy and im going rp. cause most of the stuff ive read it has good effects on shift smoothness, bg does as well, its just i can get rp local here so i can change it when i have time

I'm using the BG products trans oil with amazing results. A friend of mine used RP syncromax and it wasn't nearly as smooth as the BG oil.

This is a large THREAD started by a M6G member on our BG Products Syncro Shift II Kits as well as our Ultra Guard LS Kits that we developed. The feedback on the improvements have been very positive. Several M6G members have seen improvements over other oils, which do offer some improvement.

If anyone is old enough to remember the T5 transmission in the 80-90's Mustangs, I used to build them (and break them ) in the 90's. We were are large stocking distributor of Red Line Products back then. This is a picture from around 1994. Redine MTL was one of the first oils that had the proper CF for the modern fiber and carbon blocker rings used in the Syncro's. Redline would not respond to me about the MT82 application so I researched BG Products and in retrospect have never sold a product that had such explosive market growth.

The picture posted of the sludge is not caused by the oil, it is likely from normal syncro wear or a failure and oil staying in there too long. The additive package breaks down so these particles drop out of suspension. This is why our directions state to get the car warm before changing the fluid, so it drains most of that out. The factory oil when combined with the XL-19 additive works good for a few heat cycles but it quickly breaks down and the notchiness returns. The XL-19 additive is used to help break-in the syncros. It is typically only found in the factory fill or after a dealer repair.

We and hundreds of our customers have found that BG Syncro Shift seems to remain more stable after several heat cylcles (the cold gear nibble doesnt return) and our shop car is used mostly for track days.

The process of changing out your oil to anything will usually help. MTL is good stuff, if you have it, try it. I will say that after 400 miles of street driving the additive has already done it's job. If the MTL doesn't help give BG a try.

I've got straight Amsoil Synchromesh in mine and love it.

I went Redline MTL, have used RP before and Redline was slightly better on colder days. My trick to keep it running awesome, rare earth magnets on the fill and drain plugs and 5k mile changes. It might be good oil, but its not worth it if it only takes 1 more track day or fun night out to over do it and loose a tranny. Also, 5k miles was recommened to me on other built trans by reputable builders, specially when running power adders.

I am using the BG syncroshift II (trans) and Ultra guard (rear) and so far love them. The shifting has been smooth and I have not missed a shift yet.

I used all RP synchromesh and while it's a bit better than factory it's only mediocre at best. Yes it helped a bit but a few points are still bad. Still have some lock outs and some sort of gear nibbling in 2nd 4th and 5th

I'm building a garage right now but once I'm done later this year I'll go for the BG to try it out.

Just changed mine to royal purple synchromaxmane shifts are even better than before.,I had not problem with shifting but pep boys is offering 30% off and 3 qrts came out to $40.
