Are you talking about MGW Shifter?
There is no way to move the shifter back and forth (forward and backward) once you bolt it to transmission body (the front arm of the shifter to the transmission body), so I am confused which movement and which "click" do you expect/describe.
There is only one way to connect the transmission control rod to the the shifter control arm (linkage).
Once both parts are connected, the shifter basically moves with the transmission as one body, so when tightening the transmission bracket the two rods on the back of the shifter will rise with the holding bracket along the two vertical bolts. Your only concern is that this bracket does not bind on these bolts.
The only way to mess it up I could imagine is to mount the two sides of the front arm onto opposite sides or using the wrong holes, but I believe this you probably would not be able even to fit all together.
In correct install, you should be able to "dry shift" even on cold transmission.
If you pull from the linkage where the bolt goes, you can move it back and if you push the whole shifter from the back it moves forward with two distinct thuds. Apparently neutral is somewhere inbetween this and I have to play with it some more to find it. Otherwise, I have to unhook the linkage bolt and pull the knob of the transmission itself till the driveshaft spins freely.

So I got it in what I believe is neutral since the driveshaft moves left and right a lot more. Tightened all the bolts and can distinctly shift in 3rd and 4th but 1st and 2nd I need to adjust it more. It's definitely a bit stiff.

So I finally finished the install after waiting for my shift ball to show up (I stripped the stock shift ball because it's a complete POS if anyone has looked at it) and adjusted everything I could. It's definitely an arm workout for first and second gear right now but the shifts in every other gear feel great. Just trying to break it in more now. I'm using the classic shift ball but I'm starting to think I may need to go weighted in order to throw it into first and second easier from a stop.

Install wasn't too bad on Quick Jacks, a Daytona jack for the transmission and a creeper but I'm not getting any younger at 42 and definitely beat up my hands and arms doing this.

Driving update: I just finished 2 days of track use (Road America) with the MGW shifter in my ‘22 Mach 1. No more trouble with 3rd gear downshifts. This shifter is a huge improvement on the track and street. I ended up changing the shift handle shaft to a longer version they sell and installed one of their taller shift knobs. This brought the handle height up a little over an inch. The result is perfect for me.
