So on a road trip it was my wife's turn to drive and she did a 5-2 downshift while trying to pass (instead of 5-4). Rear wheels seemed to lock up and I yelled "clutch clutch clutch!!!!" ... I had no way of seeing the RPMs from the passenger seat, but my radar detector shows speed and it was 75 or so. Does this sound like a fatal mechanical overrev? If not, why did the rears lock up? I don't hear any weird noises and power felt ok, but I haven't gone really hard on it, because it's full of 90 octane gas I put in when we were at high elevation in New Mexico. Usually run 93 here.

What are probable overrev issues on a Coyote 5.0? Factory redline is 7400 (Gen3). No ticking noises heard... Valves? Bearings? Piston rings? I honestly have no idea. Would it cause damage if it hit 8000 for 2 seconds? What rpm is 75mph in 2nd gear on an MT82 D4 car with 3.55 gears?

Coyotes are pretty tough engines. If it locked the tires and she got the clutch it may not have over reved. The most common problem from a mechanical over rev would be valves hitting pistons. If this happened you would feel a power loss.

2nd gear in the stock Mustang with 3.55 gearing is about 6970 rpm at 75 mph.

It would probably take around 9500-10K RPM to do it!
When my intermediate shaft sheared on the 3-4 shift at 8000rpm, the engine zinged like I just added 2-3K rpm LOL.
