What could possibly cause a loss of 4 quarts of oil only six weeks after an oil change? I did the oil change so I know that isn't the cause. After the oil change, I did take it to get a coolant flush. I added oil today and the car drives fine. It's a 2015 with 102k miles. Never had an issue before with burning oil. There are no signs of a leak and no blue smoke out of the tailpipe. Checked the intercooler charge pipes and they had a normal amount of oil.

Hello; Has the PCV valve been replaced? A faulty one can cause oil consumption. It will allow oil to be sucked into the intake runners and burned in the combustion chambers. Might be a cheap fix. Of course checking the oil real often for a while ought to be done.
good luck

Would it need to be replaced if the car has a catch can?

Hello; Good question. I think so. My take is a catch can does not have the sort of valve which allows for ventilation only when positive pressure is seen inside the engine.
A clue to where the oil went might be if the catch can was loaded with oil. Would seem to me if the catch can was not loaded with oil then the PCV valve was not at fault.
Hopefully someone can check my reasoning as I am not 100% on this.

I drained the catch can today and it had the typical amount inside

I'm not familiar with the Ecoboosts, do they have a coolant/oil heat exchanger?

Oil may be crossing over to the coolant. If you lost that much oil and its there, your coolant would be mayo by now.

Hope its nothing serious.

Burning 4 quarts in 6 weeks is crazy.
Hello; More to the question is the miles during six weeks. Also, I am of the habit of checking oil more often than that. not sure if the rate has changed but the factory rate uses to be a quart in 500 miles is OK.
