Hello all,
I have a base ecoboost 6 speed purchased about a month ago. Has about 600 miles on it.

I don't have any grinding or slipping of gears, seems to shift smoothly. However, I have heard the clunk some folks have discussed here (doesn't bother me much).

What I'm more wondering about is this mechanical "whirling/whirring" kind of rotational sound that seems to come from the shifter area. I hear it most 1st and 2nd gear, a bit in 3rd, increasing as rpms increase. Seems to be more loud on start up and gets quieter as the car warms up. The noise seems to be a bit louder if I'm resting my hand on the shifter.

I was at the dealer for something else and the service manager drove it and said it was normal, also said it was too early and let the transmission break in.

I've driven manual transmissions my whole life and they haven't been noisy like this.

This is my first mustang - I absolutely love this car and it puts a huge grin on my face every time I drive it. Ford has really impressed me.

Does this transmission noise sound normal to you guys? Thanks for your help.

I have the same noise and don't like it. The dealership says it is normal. I have had transmissions with dying bearings that were quieter.

I was just about to post this question.

I almost bought an EcoBoost manual last night but I test drove it and it had this horrendous noise especially in 3rd gear. I had this issue in my 11 v6 manual transmission and Ford wouldn't address the problem either. It sounds like something is rubbing real bad. I asked the sales guy to drive the other manual on the lot and it was in a 5.0 and it did not exhibit this noise. I chose not to buy the car, and I probably wont if this is how they all sound.

I had my girlfriend take a video: [ame]

What you're hearing is not the road noise, it is coming from the transmission.

I had a new 5.0 GT PP over Memorial Day weekend and the 6 speed manual made the same whirling/whirring noise from 1st to 2nd, and a little from 2nd to 3rd. It was distracting. Due to other reasons the purchase was unwound but that's one of the things that I think will keep me from buying another one.

I think everyone pretty much has these issues after seeing thread after thread about it

The clunk/thud is worse on the PP EB/GT, and the whirling noise occurs on mine too. It does go away after heating up and the entire transmission seems to get smoother as it warms up.. pretty obvious to me the stock trans fluid is sub par. Ill def be changing it when I do my first oil change

I just got mine back from the dealership and apparently I am the third person to bring one in with the same problem at this tiny shop.

The official answer from Ford is "because numerous vehicles are experiencing the same concern it is advised that no further repair attempts should be made as this is an operating characteristic of the vehicle."

Mine does this as well, I notice it most when I am babying it. If I give it more throttle of the line it doesn't do it. Early shift into second and it will make the same noise. (Have yet to do the fluid swap) also have an appointment with the dealer this coming Monday.

so most all cars are f'd up and Ford's response is, "Because so many are fuk'd up it tells dealers don't attempt any more repairs. Tell all owners it's just going to be fuk'd up forever."

We're developing replacement gears for the MT82 units and I can tell you this, our engineer scratched his head the first time he looked at the tooth profiles on the factory gears.

This is the original OEM gear from a 5.0 Gt model. The tooth profile is very irregular and when it meshes with the counter gear, very notchy feeling.

This is a 26 spline upgraded input shaft we're producing for the 5.0L units and the tooth profile is far more regular and it meshes with the factory counter gear a lot smoother than the stock one did.

When you have an irregular tooth profile, the full surface area of the gears are not making contact as they should thus leading to premature gear whine as the gear breaks in. Its the same effect you get with a bad ring and pinion installation. At first its quiet but once it wears a little bit, it gets noisy.

The MT82 manual Getrag six speed gearbox has had a history of problems (read some of the National Highway Safety Transportation Board findings going back to 2011 and later) as they are manufactured in China (where quality control is not No.1) for Getrag and then shipped back to Ford. There are numerous threads on this forum alone as well as other sites solely dedicated to the trials and tribulations associated with the MT-82 as well as the shifter itself. Some folks have experienced some improvement with a gearbox lube flush and swap while others have experienced some improvement with overall shift quality by adding the Blowfish shift bracket to the mix. I'm at the point with my manual GT that I'm ready for it's first oil change and I'm going to have them also do a gearbox flush with Ford specified QDC tranny fluid and XL-18 additive (as recommended by Ford in their lubrication and servicing charts) and we'll see what happens.
